The left field situation for the New York Yankees heading into the postseason has become a hot topic among fans. While there is ongoing debate, manager Aaron Boone recently acknowledged that defense will play a significant role in determining the team’s plans for left field.
Boone expressed confidence in Jasson Dominguez’s potential to improve but also praised Alex Verdugo‘s strong defensive play, calling him “tremendous” in that position.
Boone’s continued support for Jasson Dominguez
As the Yankees prepared for their third game against the Orioles, Boone continued to support Dominguez despite a rough performance the previous day. Dominguez remained in the lineup, as Boone emphasized the importance of giving the young player more opportunities. In fact, Boone decided to put Dominguez in left field again on Thursday, despite recent struggles.
Yankees’ uncertainty in LF
According to Greg Joyce, the Yankees are still uncertain about their left-field strategy with only four regular-season games remaining before the playoffs. While Dominguez’s bat offers significant upside, his recent defensive struggles have raised concerns. On the other hand, Verdugo’s steady glove and experience in left field make him a safer option defensively, particularly at Yankee Stadium.
During Wednesday night’s game at Yankee Stadium, Dominguez struggled in left field, allowing a catchable fly ball hit by Colton Cowser to turn into a two-run base hit. The play occurred during a challenging first inning for Yankees starter Marcus Stroman. Dominguez later admitted he lost the ball in the wind but acknowledged that he should have made the catch, calling it “no excuse” for his misplay. The Yankees went on to lose the game 9-7, missing an opportunity to clinch the AL East division.
Boone’s options for the playoffs
With ace Gerrit Cole scheduled to pitch on Thursday, Boone hinted that Verdugo might get the start in left field, and Jose Trevino could replace the slumping Austin Wells behind the plate. However, Boone remained open-minded and decided to give Dominguez another shot in left field on Thursday. Boone noted that the team would evaluate what gives them the best chance to win on any given night. He also emphasized that while Dominguez is capable of playing left field, the Yankees would continue to monitor both his defense and offensive contributions closely.
At 21, Jasson Dominguez is primarily a center fielder, and some growing pains are expected as he adapts to playing left field at Yankee Stadium. However, Boone acknowledged that Dominguez has now missed three plays in the outfield since the team’s West Coast trip. Despite this, Boone remained optimistic, pointing out that Dominguez did not appear rattled after his misplay and continued to move well in the field.
Jasson Dominguez’s confidence in his ability to play left field hasn’t wavered. Although he hasn’t had extensive experience at the position, he believes he can improve with more practice and game time. However, the Yankees need him to progress quickly, as one mistake in a short playoff series could prove costly.
Looking ahead
Currently sitting at 92-66, the team is just one win away from clinching the AL East title. Their next opportunity comes Thursday when they face the Baltimore Orioles, with Gerrit Cole set to take on Corbin Burnes in a pivotal matchup. For the Yankees, securing the division title would be a testament to their resilience this season, a campaign in which they’ve faced high expectations, injury challenges, and mounting pressure.
As the Yankees prepare for Thursday’s 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch, all eyes will be on Jasson Dominguez and the left field matter.
