Despite Oswaldo Cabrera’s absence following ankle fracture surgery, his impact remained vibrantly alive in the Bronx this weekend, courtesy of teammates who ensured his cherished youth tradition continued uninterrupted.

Cabrera, now sidelined for the remainder of 2025 after surgeons repaired his displaced ankle fracture—sustained while attempting to score during a Seattle series—won’t physically participate in baseball activities for months. Yet his community spirit persevered as teammates Fernando Cruz, J.C. Escarra, and Pablo Reyes stepped forward to preserve his annual youth baseball initiative.

Sunday morning, mere hours before their crucial Subway Series finale against the Mets, these three Yankees arrived at the familiar Bronx diamond where Cabrera traditionally hosts local children. They dedicated their pre-game hours to running drills, providing guidance, and creating irreplaceable memories for neighborhood youth, all carrying Cabrera’s banner.

Teammates honor Cabrera’s community legacy

For Cabrera, who has cultivated a beloved clubhouse presence since his major league arrival, this camp represents more than casual community engagement. The annual gathering has evolved into a personal mission connecting him deeply with Bronx families.

With recovery constraints preventing his participation, his teammates seamlessly bridged the gap.

Fernando Cruz, J.C. Escarra and Pablo Reyes joined dozens of kids at the Oswaldo Cabrera Youth Baseball Camp in the Bronx this morning. “They showed up to support Oswaldo, who is recovering from surgery, and make sure the kids got to play ball with some Yankees today,” shared Frank Luna, a community coordinator attending the event. “Good stuff!”

This action not only highlighted the solidarity within the Yankees organization but also demonstrated their collective commitment to nurturing the next generation of neighborhood ballplayers.

Beyond box scores: Players who made a difference

Fernando Cruz, the 34-year-old bullpen addition from this past offseason, has established himself as a stabilizing clubhouse influence alongside his mound contributions. His participation underscored the mentorship role he’s embraced during his initial Bronx campaign.

Catcher J.C. Escarra remains early in his major league journey. Yet on this day, his focus shifted from batting stances to ground balls and encouragement for awestruck young fans.

Utility specialist Pablo Reyes paused his pregame preparation to orchestrate fielding exercises and run bases with enthusiastic participants.

For these children, the day offered unprecedented access to professional players. For the Yankees, it provided perspective on baseball’s foundational joy that sometimes gets overshadowed in professional competition.

Cabrera’s journey continues off-field

New York Yankees’ Oswaldo Cabrera suffered an ankle fracture while scoring a run during the ninth inning of a baseball game against the Seattle Mariners, Monday, May 12, 2025, in Seattle.

Cabrera’s injury represents one of the more distressing moments in the Yankees‘ current campaign. While attempting to score from second on an outfield hit in Seattle, he suffered a catastrophic ankle twist crossing home plate, resulting in a displaced fracture requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Before this setback, Cabrera had secured his position as the Yankees’ everyday third baseman. Through 34 games, he produced a .243/.293/.338 slash line with one homer and 11 RBIs while providing dependable defense. This marked his first sustained opportunity as a starter, where his work ethic quickly earned organizational respect.

Though his on-field contributions have paused, his influence continues to develop both within and beyond the clubhouse.

As Cabrera begins rehabilitation and the Yankees maintain momentum at 28-19, numerous storylines continue developing. However, Sunday’s gathering served as a powerful reminder that the franchise’s impact extends far beyond statistics.

Amid a season already marked by injuries and adjustments, the organization prioritized supporting one of their own while simultaneously strengthening community bonds.
