NEW YORK — A prospect can bounce between the majors and the minors for a year without ever getting a clean look. Spencer Jones is about to get his.
Jones has been up and down the Yankees roster all season, a name on the fringe of the lineup more than a fixture in it. His at-bats came in bunches, then vanished. He never had the runway to settle in.
That changed over the weekend, and not because of anything Jones did. It changed because of an injury to a teammate the Yankees can hardly afford to lose.
The door did not just crack open for the rookie. It swung wide, and his manager said so out loud.
The question now is whether Jones can walk through it and stay.
An injury turns a reserve into an everyday option
Cody Bellinger’s left hamstring strain sent him to the 10-day injured list before Sunday’s series finale in Philadelphia. To fill the roster spot, the Yankees recalled Jones from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
This is not a standard emergency call-up. Manager Aaron Boone made clear that Jones would get regular work in left field, with Max Schuemann taking some of the starts against left-handers and Jasson Dominguez staying in right.
That plan hands Jones something he has not had in his previous stints: a defined role and steady playing time. He will get the plate appearances needed to find a rhythm rather than the scattered looks that marked his earlier promotions.
The timing raises the stakes. Bellinger joined Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list, leaving the Yankees without three of their most important bats. New York has had one of baseball’s worst offenses since Judge last played, which makes any source of power valuable right now.
Boone signals belief in the rookie
Boone did not frame the move as a stopgap. He spoke about Jones as a player he believes can produce at the big-league level, not merely occupy a spot until Bellinger heals.
“Spencer’s ready for this shot,” Boone said. “I think he’s capable of having success up here and I think he’s ready to have success up here. Now you’ve got to go do it, obviously, but try to get him in matchups that are good and favorable. I feel like he can add something to our lineup.”
The endorsement matters because Jones has not yet forced the issue. His previous looks produced flashes without a foothold, and a public vote of confidence from the manager changes the framing of this stint.
It also comes with a challenge baked in. Jones now has to prove the belief is warranted against major-league pitching, in a lineup that badly needs someone to step up.
A track record with promise and gaps
Jones is up for the third time this season. He struggled after his first promotion in early May, then held his own the second time, batting .265 with two home runs and an .815 OPS over 20 games from June 5 to July 1. He also appeared as the 27th man for a July 22 doubleheader and went 0 for 3 with a walk.
His minor-league profile is loud. At Triple-A this year he has slashed .273/.385/.557 with 14 home runs, the kind of power-and-patience line that has long made him one of the Yankees’ most intriguing prospects. The strikeouts remain the concern that has followed him up every level.
There are practical wrinkles to the assignment. Jones is a left-handed hitter, like Bellinger, and the Yankees have been cautious about using him against left-handed pitching. He has also never played left field in the majors, with just 20 games there in the minors.
That is why Schuemann figures to share the position and why Dominguez stays put in right. The Yankees are building the role around Jones’s strengths while shielding his weaknesses, at least early.
A short window with deadline stakes
The Yankees opportunity may not last long. Bellinger’s IL stint could prove relatively brief, and once he returns, Jones could slide back down unless his bat has made him impossible to remove.
There is a larger backdrop, too. With the Aug. 3 trade deadline days away, the Yankees are already seeking a catcher and bullpen help, and the injuries have pushed an outfield bat higher on the wish list. A strong Jones showing could tell the front office it can cover the need from within.
Continued struggles would point the other way, giving Brian Cashman more reason to add an outfielder before the deadline. \
For now, the runway is his. Jones has had major-league chances before, but rarely one this clear, and never with his manager promising the at-bats to back it up. The next week will show whether he can turn a fill-in role into a lasting place in the Yankees lineup.
