The competition for the Yankees’ vacant starting pitcher role intensified on Friday night as both top contenders, Luis Gil and Will Warren, delivered impressive performances in their final spring training appearances. This strong showing by both young arms has thrown a curveball at the Yankees’ decision-making process as they approach the end of training camp.

Taking the mound first, Gil displayed his talent by pitching the opening four innings of the Yankees’ 5-3 win over the Mets at Steinbrenner Field. He struck out five batters while surrendering only two runs, one of which came on a home run by Mark Vientos. Gil’s outing concluded with a pitch count of 63.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Gil’s strong showing, highlighting his case for a roster spot. “He’s presented a compelling case for himself to earn a spot on the team,” Boone remarked.

With both Gil and Warren delivering solid performances, the Yankees now face a tougher decision when finalizing their starting rotation. Both pitchers have showcased their strengths and resilience, making the competition for the fifth starter role a close one.

Following Luis Gil’s impressive start, Will Warren stepped onto the mound and delivered an equally strong performance. He pitched five dominant innings, allowing only one run and pushing his pitch count to 71.

Manager Aaron Boone was effusive in his praise of Warren’s outing. He lauded Warren’s versatility and poise on the mound, particularly highlighting his diverse pitching arsenal that translates well to a starting role. Boone also noted Warren’s confidence, which was evident throughout his outing.

With both Gil and Warren delivering strong showings, Boone acknowledged the growing difficulty in finalizing the starting rotation. “It’s a tough call,” Boone admitted. “They’ve both made a compelling case for themselves.”

The competition extends beyond Friday’s games. On Saturday, the Yankees have a split-squad game against the Tigers, providing another platform for contenders Cody Poteet and Clayton Beeter to showcase their abilities. Both pitchers are vying for the coveted fifth starter role.

Luke Weaver remains a possibility, although his most recent outing saw him throw only 50 pitches. This limited pitch count suggests that, if he doesn’t secure the starting role, he might be best suited for a long reliever role in the bullpen.

With the season rapidly approaching, the Yankees’ starting rotation picture remains unsettled. The strong performances by Gil and Warren have created a genuine competition, making the final decision a close one for manager Aaron Boone and the coaching staff.

Yankees’ starting role or bullpen slot for Gil and Warren?

The battle for the Yankees’ fifth starter role has transformed into a strategic puzzle, with manager Aaron Boone acknowledging that both Luis Gil and Will Warren could potentially find themselves on the team.

This opens the door for creative solutions. While the initial assumption was a straight competition for one spot, Boone hinted at the possibility of both pitchers earning positions. In this scenario, Warren, who is not currently on the 40-man roster, could potentially secure the fifth starter role. Gil, on the other hand, might find himself utilized in a similar fashion to Michael King, who functioned as a swingman, bouncing between starting and relief appearances.

The Yankees could strategically delay adding Warren to the active roster until the fifth game of the season. This maneuver would allow them to carry an additional reliever for the initial four games, providing more flexibility in their bullpen composition.

“It’s all about roster configuration and making sure we have the right pieces in place,” Boone explained. He expressed confidence that the Yankees have a wealth of talented arms beyond just Gil and Warren.

While Boone hinted at a potential decision before some players head to Mexico City on Saturday night, it appears a final call might not be immediate. The strong performances by both Gil and Warren have created a complex situation, and the Yankees are carefully evaluating all options to ensure they have the most effective pitching staff possible as they head into the regular season.

Soto stays back

Yankees' Anthony Volpe is with Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo at Yankee Stadium.

Juan Soto, initially slated to participate in the Yankees’ upcoming games in Mexico City, will no longer make the trip. According to manager Boone, the decision was made to allow Soto to remain at the spring training facility and receive additional work on his swing mechanics. Boone believes the dedicated resources available at the facility will be most beneficial for Soto in finalizing his preparations for the regular season.

While the full roster for the Mexico City games departing Saturday night hasn’t been finalized, several key players like Giancarlo Stanton, Alex Verdugo, Jose Trevino, Anthony Volpe, and Victor Gonzalez are still expected to be part of the traveling contingent.

In a separate roster move, the Yankees optioned left-handed reliever Clayton Andrews to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. This move suggests the team is finalizing its pitching staff configuration as the regular season approaches.

  1. How can you honestly write that ANY roster decision is in the hands of Boone and the coaching staff? These decisions are all made by Cashman and his gang. Maybe, just maybe Boone & staff might be allowed to voice an opinion, but really they will get what the get and not date to complain about it.
