New York — Yankees GM Brian Cashman has a plan. It involves three names. Two play in the outfield. One throws from the mound. And the order of priority might surprise you.
The Yankees are approaching this offseason with a clear blueprint, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The strategy centers on a trio of targets that would address the team’s most pressing needs heading into 2026.
But which player sits at the top of that list? And which one serves merely as insurance if Plan A falls through?
Yankees identify their primary outfield target

Cody Bellinger is the Yankees’ No. 1 target, according to Heyman’s report. That designation carries significant meaning given who else remains available on the open market.
The 30-year-old left-handed slugger posted a strong season in his only year with the Bronx Bombers. He slashed .272/.334/.480 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs across 152 games. His 4.9 fWAR marked a career high. His 13.7% strikeout rate was the lowest of his career.

But numbers only tell part of the story. The Yankees value Bellinger for something beyond statistics.
“The Yankees continue to make Bellinger their No. 1 target,” Heyman reported. “The Yankees have checked in on Tucker, but he appears to be a backup plan due to Bellinger’s versatility and New York chops.”
That versatility proved valuable last season. Bellinger logged innings at center field, left field, right field, and first base. He posted plus-seven Outs Above Average on defense. Manager Aaron Boone could deploy him almost anywhere.
Star outfielder positioned as fallback option
Kyle Tucker sits atop most free agent rankings this winter. He is widely regarded as the best player available. But the Yankees apparently view him differently.
Tucker finished 2025 with a .266 average, 22 home runs, 73 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in 136 games for the Cubs. Injuries hampered his season. A hairline fracture in his right hand limited his production during the summer. A calf strain cost him three weeks in September.
The 29-year-old four-time All-Star is expected to command a contract north of $350 million. Some projections reach $400 million. That price tag could be the deciding factor for the Yankees.
Bellinger is projected to sign for roughly $140 million over five years, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Heyman has suggested a six-year, $180 million deal might be necessary. Either way, the gap between Tucker and Bellinger is substantial.
Japanese ace emerges as rotation answer
The third piece of the Yankees’ blueprint involves the pitcher every contender wants this winter. Tatsuya Imai is expected to arrive in the United States in early December to begin meetings with interested clubs.
The 27-year-old right-hander dominated in Nippon Professional Baseball last season. He posted a 1.92 ERA with a 0.89 WHIP across 162 2/3 innings for the Seibu Lions. He struck out 178 batters. His 32% whiff rate was the highest ever recorded by a qualified NPB pitcher.

Imai has until Jan. 2 to sign a contract after being posted by his Japanese club. Heyman projects an eight-year, $200 million deal.
What makes Imai particularly appealing to the Yankees? His stated disdain for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“I want to take them down,” Imai said in a Japanese television interview. “I think beating a team like that and becoming World Champions would be the most valuable thing in my life.”
The Dodgers beat the Yankees in the 2024 World Series and repeated as champions in 2025. They already employ fellow Japanese stars Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki. Imai made clear he would rather compete against them than join them.
Rotation needs drive pitching pursuit
The Yankees need pitching help badly. Their rotation faces serious uncertainty entering spring training.
Gerrit Cole continues recovering from Tommy John surgery. He is not expected back until mid-May at the earliest. Carlos Rodon underwent elbow surgery last month. He will miss at least the first few weeks of the season. Clarke Schmidt had Tommy John surgery and likely will not return until the second half.
Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, and Will Warren currently project as the rotation members for Opening Day. A fifth spot remains open. Imai would provide stability at a time when the Yankees desperately need it.
Division rivals force Yankees to act
The Yankees cannot afford to stand still. Their AL East rivals have already made significant moves.
The Blue Jays signed Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract. The Red Sox traded for three-time All-Star Sonny Gray and continue pursuing additional upgrades.
Heyman noted that “despite owner Hal Steinbrenner’s obvious ongoing concern about the bottom line, they will almost surely work hard to improve their postseason team.”
The Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009. They reached the Fall Classic in 2024 but lost to the Dodgers. Last season ended with a third consecutive first-round exit from the playoffs.
The blueprint is clear. Bellinger brings back a proven bat who thrived under the Bronx spotlight. Imai adds rotational certainty with a chip on his shoulder. Tucker waits in the wings if circumstances change.
Three targets. Two outfielders. One arm. The Yankees have made their priorities known.
Now they must execute.
