PHILADELPHIA — For two nights, the Yankees won games almost no one else could win, riding pitching so stingy it barely gave the Phillies a pulse. On the third night, the whole formula collapsed.
The Yankees came to Citizens Bank Park and choked the life out of a dangerous Philadelphia lineup. They took the opener 1-0 and the middle game 3-1. Across those two wins, they allowed a single run.
That kind of run prevention had become the team’s identity. With the offense gutted by injuries, the arms carried everything. It was the one thing the Yankees could count on every night.
Then came the finale, and the contrast was jarring. The strength that had defined the week did not just dip. It disappeared.
By the middle innings, the game was already out of reach.
A first-inning triple sets the tone for a rout
The Yankees lost the series finale 11-4 on Sunday night, undone by the pitching that had kept them afloat for weeks. After surrendering one run in two games, they gave up 11 in one.
Will Warren set the disaster in motion. Trea Turner opened the bottom of the first with a triple to right-center that Trent Grisham could not cut off. Kyle Schwarber’s sacrifice fly made it 1-0. Bryson Stott crushed a hanging fastball for a solo homer in the second.
The third inning turned a deficit into a blowout. Warren retired the first two hitters, then walked Schwarber, gave up a double to Bryce Harper and issued an intentional walk to Brandon Marsh to load the bases. Alec Bohm followed with a nine-pitch, bases-clearing double that a diving Max Schuemann could not reach in left. Stott’s single made it 6-0.
Warren was gone in the fourth, charged with six runs in three-plus innings. He threw a first-pitch strike to just seven of the 17 hitters he faced, a control problem that put him behind all night.
Warren does not hide from a rough night
The right-hander was blunt about the outing, which extended the worst stretch of his season. He offered no excuses and made clear his frustration with a slide he cannot explain away.
“I’m tired of going out there and doing exactly what happened tonight,” Will Warren said. “It’s pretty frustrating.”
Warren pinpointed the pattern that has undone him: falling behind hitters and losing the freedom to attack. The second time through the order, he said, the Phillies punished every mistake.
“You’re playing in their hand when you get behind, as compared to being on the attack and having them on their heels,” Warren said. “First time through, there weren’t a lot of first-pitch strikes. That didn’t affect us that much the first time through, but the second time through, they were ready for everything.”
Manager Aaron Boone saw the same issue, pointing to the counts that kept tilting in Philadelphia’s favor.
“Struggling controlling the zone and getting ahead,” Boone said. “It seemed like he was 1-0 to most guys. They got in some leverage counts and made him pay a little bit.”
A brief rally dies as the bullpen caves
The Yankees did not go quietly at first. They trailed one of the game’s toughest lefties, Cristopher Sanchez, yet clawed back with three runs in the fifth. Anthony Volpe‘s second double of the night capped the rally and cut the deficit to 6-3.
The comeback ended almost as fast as it started. Ryan Yarbrough took over and gave up five runs in the sixth, a rally that began when Volpe’s throwing error extended the inning. Stott delivered another bases-clearing double to blow it open at 11-3, and the Yankees never threatened again.
Ben Rice provided the lone highlight for New York, launching his 31st home run. Only Yordan Alvarez and Schwarber have hit more in the majors this season. The rest of the night belonged to a Yankees pitching staff that could not find the strike zone or a stop sign.
The loss cost the Yankees a sweep and a statement. Instead of burying a contender, they handed one an easy night and a reminder that their margin is thin without their bats.
A thinning roster heads into the deadline
The defeat came hours after another blow. Cody Bellinger landed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring, joining Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the sidelines. The Yankees called up prospect Spencer Jones to help fill the void.
Judge traveled with the team to Chicago but said there was no update on when he might have his fractured rib re-imaged. He pushed a message of belief in the group’s depth even as the injuries pile up.
“We’ve got a lot of depth. We’ve got a lot of guys in the Minor Leagues ready to go,” Judge said. “You can’t replace a Bellinger, but we’re going to keep doing what we do.”
The Yankees fell to 59-46, three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. They open a stretch against the White Sox and Cubs that leads into the Aug. 3 trade deadline, where they are seeking a right-handed-hitting catcher and bullpen help.
For one night, the arms that had masked every flaw became the flaw. The Yankees can survive a cold lineup when the pitching holds. Sunday was the reminder of what happens when it does not.
