The New York Yankees and free-agent pitcher Walker Buehler are reportedly exploring a potential deal, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. The connection comes just weeks after Buehler’s last outing—securing the Dodgers’ World Series victory at Yankee Stadium on October 30.

Buehler, 30, is coming off a rebound campaign following his second Tommy John surgery in 2022. Spotrac projects his next contract at approximately $3.9 million, reflecting both his recent recovery and his proven capability as one of the National League’s top pitchers. His standout 2021 season included a 2.47 ERA over 207.2 innings in 33 starts, cementing his reputation before the injury setback.

Buehler a comeback hero

The Dodgers had concerns about Buehler’s ability to return to form after his August 2022 UCL procedure fully. He rejoined the rotation on May 6, earning a win against Miami in a four-inning appearance. While his 2024 regular season had inconsistent moments—including a rough outing in Game 3 of the NLDS against San Diego—Buehler’s postseason resurgence was critical to the Dodgers’ championship success.

His October highlights included shutout performances in Game 3 of the NLCS versus the Mets and Game 3 of the World Series. The pinnacle of his season came when he closed out Game 5, earning the Dodgers their title.

For the Yankees, adding Buehler would bolster a rotation already headlined by Gerrit Cole. His postseason prowess aligns with the team’s ambition to return to championship contention. However, integrating Buehler could prompt the Yankees to explore trading Marcus Stroman, who was displaced in the postseason by rookie standout Luis Gil.

Teams interested in Buehler will be betting on his ability to build on his postseason momentum and reclaim the fastball dominance he displayed in 2021. If a deal with the Yankees materializes, Buehler could be a key piece in their quest to strengthen the rotation and make another deep playoff push.
