Injury bug bites the Yankees again with Jazz Chisholm Jr. moving to 15-day IL. Jorbit Vivas steps in to fill roster spot.
The New York Yankees have placed second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain, the team announced Friday. In a corresponding roster move, infielder Jorbit Vivas has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. His injury tenure starts from April 30.
This followed an MRI scan this morning. Reports indicate a possible Grade 1 right oblique strain.
Injury setback for Chisholm

Chisholm, who had recently found his rhythm in the Yankees lineup, is expected to miss at least 10 days with what the club has described as a right oblique strain. The injury reportedly occurred during a swing in Wednesday night’s win over the Orioles. He exited the game in the sixth inning after wincing during a check-swing and did not return.
Oblique strains are notoriously tricky for position players, particularly those who rely on explosive rotation in their swing mechanics—as Chisholm does. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters the team will monitor Chisholm’s recovery day-by-day, but acknowledged a cautious approach is necessary.
“Jazz has been a dynamic part of our infield and lineup,” Boone said. “We’re hopeful it’s a minor strain, but obliques can be unpredictable. We’ll take our time.”
Jorbit Vivas gets a second chance
To fill the void, Jorbit Vivas rejoins the Yankees after a strong start to his 2025 campaign at Triple-A. The 23-year-old Venezuelan infielder has a robust .319/.426/.436 slash line (139 wRC+) while collecting two homers, five doubles, and six stolen bases (though caught four times). His plate discipline particularly stands out, drawing walks (12.9%) more frequently than striking out (6.9%).
Known for his plate discipline and ability to play second, third, and occasionally shortstop, Vivas brings needed versatility to the Yankees’ infield.
Acquired in a depth move during the offseason, the versatile left-handed hitter made a brief appearance with the Yankees during spring training and was widely considered one of the most MLB-ready infield options on the 40-man roster.

Infield shuffle ahead
With Chisholm sidelined, the Yankees may lean more heavily on a combination of Oswald Peraza, Oswaldo Cabrera, and now Vivas to cover second base.
Chisholm’s absence is especially tough timing for the Yankees, who are off to a strong start in the AL East and will now be without one of their most energetic and dynamic defenders. In 22 games this season, Chisholm was hitting .263/.327/.448 with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs, and 6 stolen bases while showcasing elite range and flair at second base.
What does it mean for the Yankees
The move underscores the importance of organizational depth, something the Yankees have prioritized in recent years. With Vivas and Peraza both available, the team avoids an immediate roster crisis—but the pressure is on to maintain momentum in a tight AL East race.
The Yankees begin a six-game homestand on Friday, with a series against the Rays and then vs. the Padres. Vivas is expected to be available off the bench immediately, with potential for starting duties depending on matchups.
The Yankees have not provided a definitive timeline for Chisholm’s return, though 1-2 weeks is typical for minor oblique strains. The team will likely re-evaluate his status by next weekend.
As the Yankees aim to stay atop the division, they’ll now rely on Vivas and their bench depth to keep the infield production steady.
