New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. left Tuesday’s game against the Orioles in the top of the first inning after suffering what the team called “right flank discomfort.”
The injury appeared to occur during Jazz Chisholm’s first-inning plate appearance against Baltimore starter Kyle Gibson. After fouling off the first pitch, Chisholm grimaced and reached for his side, prompting a visit from Yankees manager Aaron Boone and assistant athletic trainer Alfonso Malaguti. He remained in the game and later stroked a double down the right-field line, advancing to third base on a throwing error by right fielder Ramón Laureano. Moments later, he was lifted for pinch-runner Oswald Peraza.
The double marked Jazz Chisholm’s 19th hit of the season, raising his batting average to .181. In 30 games this year, his first full season with the Yankees since being acquired last July, he has tallied seven home runs and 17 RBIs.
Yankees await injury update

As of Tuesday night, the Yankees had not announced the severity of Jazz Chisholm’s injury. Should he miss extended time, the team could turn to Oswaldo Cabrera, Peraza, or Pablo Reyes to cover second base. Cabrera has recently held down third base in the absence of DJ LeMahieu, who remains on a rehab assignment while managing issues with both his left calf and right hip.
LeMahieu received a cortisone injection in his hip earlier Tuesday, with Boone calling the move “preemptive” after the veteran infielder reported early signs of discomfort. LeMahieu missed time last season due to a similar issue.
Despite the injury setback, the Yankees opened the night in explosive fashion. The team hit four home runs in the first inning—matching a season high—with long balls from Trent Grisham, Aaron Judge, Ben Rice, and Cody Bellinger.
According to MLB, Jazz Chisholm’s status remains day-to-day pending further evaluation.
