Questions mount: Are Yankees hiding severity of Aaron Judge’s injury?

New York —  Aaron Judge‘s flexor strain diagnosis follows a familiar Yankees pattern of initial downplaying before IL stint, raising concerns about their injury communication practices.

The New York Yankees placed reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list July 27 with a right flexor strain, but the timeline and handling of his elbow injury have reignited longstanding questions about the organization’s transparency with player health issues.

Aaron Judge first felt discomfort during a throw home Tuesday against Toronto, visibly wincing on camera after a subsequent throw. Manager Aaron Boone initially brushed off concerns, calling it routine aches and pains. Three days later, Judge couldn’t throw past 60 feet and required an MRI that revealed the flexor strain.

The sequence mirrors a documented pattern of Yankees injury mismanagement spanning nearly a decade, where initial optimism consistently gives way to extended absences for star players.

Medical experts challenge “good news” narrative

While Boone celebrated the MRI results showing no UCL damage as “good news,” sports injury expert Will Carroll offered a starkly different assessment on Foul Territory.

“This is worse than a UCL tear,” Carroll stated. “For a hitter, a flexor tendon — which is what you need to rotate the bat, maintain grip — this is everything. This doesn’t heal quickly and often takes a month or even more.”

Carroll’s analysis contradicts the Yankees’ optimistic 10-day timeline, suggesting Judge may not return until September or may need another IL stint after some time. Medical research supports these concerns, with studies showing 19.4% of MLB players with flexor strains require UCL reconstruction within one year.

The flexor-pronator muscle mass provides dynamic support for the UCL, making strains in this area particularly concerning as potential precursors to more serious elbow injuries.

Historical pattern of downplaying star injuries

Yankees’ injury transparency issues extend far beyond Judge’s current situation. Research shows the organization has spent $488 million on injured players over nine seasons (2015-2023), exceeding the league average by $271.5 million.

Athlon Sports’ Kristie Ackert documented the recurring pattern: “Too often, Judge’s trips to the injured list are preceded by Aaron Boone downplaying any issue. The Yankees become more secretive than the NSA when it comes to Judge’s health.”

Previous Judge injuries follow identical patterns. His 2019 oblique strain, 2023 toe injury, and multiple other IL stints were all initially minimized by team officials before requiring extended absences.

A FanSided analysis noted: “The organization has a long history of downplaying injuries and outright getting timetables wrong. For all we know, Judge could return next week, or he could be out until mid-September.”

Judge pushed to continue, Yankees overruled

Judge himself revealed the internal tension surrounding his IL placement, stating he was “reluctant” to go on the injured list.

"I was reluctant about going on the IL… If I can hit, let me hit."

“Throwing is the main concern. I’ve been hitting with it during the last couple of days. If I could hit, get me out there,” Judge said, requesting to continue as designated hitter.

The Yankees refused Judge’s request, a decision that appears medically sound given the injury’s grip strength implications. However, the initial delay in seeking treatment raises questions about organizational priorities.

Judge played Friday despite clear throwing limitations, going 0-for-3 in a crucial 12-5 loss to Philadelphia while unable to make routine defensive plays.

Roster moves suggest deeper concerns

The Yankees’ immediate roster response hints at longer-term worries about Judge’s availability. The organization acquired utility man Amed Rosario from Washington and began preparing Giancarlo Stanton for outfield duty despite his own elbow issues.

Stanton hasn’t played outfield since 2023 and dealt with tennis elbow problems that delayed his 2025 season debut until June. His defensive limitations and MLB’s sixth-slowest sprint speed make him a problematic replacement.

SNY’s Andy Martino reported that Yankees executives initially feared Judge needed Tommy John surgery, which would have triggered a complete strategy pivot to becoming trade deadline sellers.

“On Friday night, the Yankees brass went to bed thinking Aaron Judge maybe, probably needs Tommy John surgery,” Martino revealed.

Playoff implications mount as team struggles

Judge’s absence compounds the Yankees’ dramatic second-half collapse. The team has posted a 15-24 record since June 13, the worst in the American League during that span.

Saturday’s loss dropped New York to 57-49, falling 6.5 games behind Toronto in the AL East despite holding a seven-game lead earlier this season. They currently cling to the top AL Wild Card position by just 1.5 games.

Aaron Judge leads MLB in batting average (.342), OPS (1.160), and WAR (7.2), making his absence particularly damaging during the team’s offensive struggles. The Yankees have been shut out three times in recent games and scored just five runs over a six-game stretch.

The historical context is concerning. In 2023, Judge’s injury-shortened 106-game season coincided with the Yankees missing the playoffs entirely with an 82-80 record.

Expert analysis points to systemic issues

The recurring pattern suggests organizational problems beyond individual injury management. Scientific American noted that after the Yankees’ injury-plagued 2019 season, the team made “sweeping changes” to the training staff, acknowledging systemic failures.

Despite those changes, injury transparency issues persist. Sports analysts consistently note the gap between Yankees injury assessments and actual recovery timelines, particularly for high-profile players.

The financial implications are staggering. The Yankees’ top-heavy payroll commits $108 million to Judge, Gerrit Cole, and Stanton — 39.5% of their total budget — limiting roster depth when injuries occur.

Pattern stirs deeper problems

Judge’s flexor strain diagnosis represents more than an isolated injury concern. The familiar sequence of initial downplaying, delayed medical attention, and eventual IL placement reflects institutional practices that prioritize short-term competitive advantages over transparent injury reporting.

While no UCL damage provides genuine relief, expert medical opinion suggests the Yankees’ optimistic timeline may prove overly ambitious. The organization’s historical track record offers little reason for confidence in its injury assessments.

For a franchise already struggling through its worst extended stretch in years, continued questions about injury transparency add another layer of uncertainty to an increasingly precarious playoff position.
