NEW YORK — Hours after trading for third baseman Ryan McMahon to address defensive concerns, the New York Yankees watched their same old problems resurface in spectacular fashion during a 12-5 defeat to Philadelphia at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees’ relief corps surrendered 10 earned runs across the final three frames. Their defense committed two more errors. A promising 3-2 advantage vanished into another frustrating chapter of an increasingly difficult season.

With Toronto’s victory over Detroit, the Yankees now trail by 5.5 games in the American League East standings.

“We’ve played some close games, and some of those have cost us,” first baseman Paul Goldschmidt said, capturing the essence of another defeat that highlighted New York’s persistent struggles.

The Yankees held a 3-2 edge entering the seventh after Giancarlo Stanton’s sixth-inning solo blast to center field. But their bullpen quickly transformed hope into heartbreak.

Tim Hill departed with two runners aboard and one out. Luke Weaver inherited the mess and coaxed a grounder from Nick Castellanos toward first base. Goldschmidt attempted to nail the tying run at home plate but threw wildly, allowing Trea Turner to score while Castellanos advanced to second.

“That was a mistake,” Goldschmidt admitted. “I should have took the out at first.”

The situation deteriorated rapidly. J.T. Realmuto followed with a three-run homer to left field, suddenly giving Philadelphia a 6-3 lead. The blast marked another July meltdown for Weaver, who has surrendered nine earned runs in just 8 2/3 innings this month.

Anthony Volpe and Aaron Judge briefly sparked hope with a solo homer and sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 6-5. But Ian Hamilton allowed Kyle Schwarber’s second two-run homer in the eighth inning. Scott Effross entered for the ninth and permitted four additional runs, including Bryson Stott’s two-run double.

Bronx faithful responded with a chorus of boos. Effross was optioned to Triple-A Scranton after the game. Manager Aaron Boone described his bullpen as “short” and called managing it a “challenge.”

“All lines are in the water right now,” Boone said regarding potential deadline relief help. “You never know what’s going to happen.”

Fielding mistakes pile up again

The Yankees entered Friday ranking ninth in Major League Baseball with 52 errors. They departed with 54.

Rookie starter Will Warren committed the first miscue on a potential double-play ball in the second inning. He bounced back to strike out Otto Kemp and Bryson Stott, completing 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts and two earned runs on 89 pitches.

Paul Goldschmidt’s seventh-inning throwing error proved more costly. It represented the game’s turning point while underscoring a troubling pattern. Following a four-error performance in Toronto earlier this week, Friday delivered another reminder that defense — once a Yankees trademark — has become their weakness.

Boone acknowledged this week that his team “needed to tighten up” defensively. Friday’s performance suggested they’re moving in the wrong direction.

Power display falls short

The Yankees’ offense generated four solo home runs from Cody Bellinger, Austin Wells, Stanton, and Volpe. But all came with empty bases, illustrating their ongoing struggle with situational hitting.

Aaron Judge contributed a sacrifice fly. Otherwise, the Yankees failed to sustain meaningful rallies. They stranded baserunners and couldn’t exploit Philadelphia’s bullpen changes.

“We’re in a good spot to make a run here, and I think the tides are going to turn,” Wells said. “On the pitching side, just get a little tighter with what we’re trying to do. And on the hitter’s side, keep going and working good at-bats and turning the lineup over.”

McMahon trade offers hope

Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon could be another option for the Yankees if they’re unable to land Eugenio Suárez before the MLB trade deadline.

Friday’s acquisition of McMahon from Colorado provides reason for optimism. The third baseman brings superior defensive metrics, positional flexibility, and left-handed power to address multiple Yankees needs.

Boone stressed that McMahon’s arrival could stabilize the infield. “Now bringing in a McMahon, and with Anthony [Volpe], we need them to play the way they’re capable of playing and how we expect them to play,” the manager said. “If they do, that becomes a strength.”

New York optioned Jorbit Vivas to create roster space. McMahon should make his Yankees debut Saturday, providing much-needed defensive stability at third base.

“He’s gonna help us,” Goldschmidt said.

Trade urgency felt more

The Yankees have posted a 14-22 record since June 13 and lost 22 of their past 36 games. Their bullpen carries a 4.07 ERA that ranks 20th in MLB. Friday’s collapse will worsen those numbers.

Key relievers Mark Leiter Jr., Fernando Cruz, Yerry De Los Santos, and Ryan Yarbrough remain on the injured list.

General Manager Brian Cashman faces pressure to upgrade before the July 31 deadline. A left-handed reliever tops the priority list. The Yankees might also pursue a back-end starter to help their overworked rotation.

For now, Boone and his players are fighting to stay afloat.

“We got to have guys step up,” Boone said. “It’s a challenge right now.”

The 56-47 Yankees will attempt to bounce back Saturday with McMahon in the lineup. But their problems extend beyond any single acquisition. Closing the AL East gap and maintaining playoff hopes requires a return to fundamental baseball.

“We still have a lot of confidence in ourselves,” Goldschmidt said. “Hopefully it’ll start Saturday, we play well, and it continues on.”
