As the dust settles from the MLB Winter Meetings, the New York Yankees have turned to a familiar face in their quest to bolster their bullpen. Jonathan Loaisiga, a seasoned right-hander, is set to rejoin the Yankees after agreeing to a one-year deal with a club option for 2026, according to insider reports. The financial terms remain undisclosed, pending Loaisiga’s physical examination.

Loaisiga’s road back to Yankees’ bullpen

Loaisiga’s return comes after a challenging couple of seasons marked by injuries. The 30-year-old has showcased moments of brilliance during his tenure with the Yankees, posting a career ERA of 3.44. However, persistent injuries have limited his availability, with just 21 2/3 innings pitched over the past two seasons. His 2024 campaign was particularly brief, sidelined after only four innings due to a right flexor strain that ultimately required elbow surgery.

Despite these setbacks, sources indicate Loaisiga is on track for a full recovery, with bullpen sessions expected to resume next month. If healthy, he could emerge as a key late-inning reliever, filling the void left by Clay Holmes, now with the Mets, and free agent Tommy Kahnle.

Loaisiga’s return is part of a broader Yankees bullpen overhaul. With Holmes gone, the Yankees’ reliever core is being reshaped around arms like Luke Weaver, Ian Hamilton, Jake Cousins, and Mark Leiter Jr. Loaisiga’s high-velocity pitches and late-game reliability could restore stability in critical moments.

Yankees’ strategic trade with Red Sox

Cashman did finalize a smaller trade with the Red Sox, sending Triple-A catcher Carlos Narvaez to Boston in exchange for pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and international bonus pool money. This extra financial flexibility could be instrumental in pursuing Japanese pitching phenom Roki Sasaki, a 23-year-old sensation whose signing window opens December 15 and runs until January 21.

Rodriguez-Cruz, a 21-year-old right-hander, brings notable upside to the Yankees’ farm system. Last season, he posted a 5-5 record with a 2.91 ERA across 21 games, including 20 starts, while striking out 102 batters in 89.2 innings. His performance earned him recognition as a Low Class-A All-Star by Baseball America.

According to MLB Pipeline, Rodriguez-Cruz’s arsenal includes a fastball that tops out at 98 mph, a sharp upper-80s slider, a well-placed curveball, and an evolving splitter. His frame and mechanics offer significant potential, though improving his control remains a key development focus.

The Yankees’ acquisition of bonus pool money raises their total to approximately $6.26 million, positioning them within striking distance of the international signing leaders. Eight teams currently hold the maximum allocation of $7.56 million.

Roki Sasaki, often compared to Shohei Ohtani for his electric arm, is expected to command significant interest. His signing would require the Yankees to allocate international bonus pool money due to his age (23) and limited professional experience in Japan.

With Cashman actively working the trade and free-agent market, the Yankees’ offseason narrative continues to evolve. The return of Jonathan Loaisiga, coupled with potential international signings and high-level prospect acquisitions, signals the team’s aggressive approach to reclaiming its competitive edge. While Soto’s departure to the Mets stung, the Yankees are clearly determined to rebuild a formidable roster for the upcoming season.
