The New York Yankees are making waves in the offseason once again, setting their sights on one of the most sought-after pitchers on the international market: 23-year-old Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki. However, securing the talented right-hander may not be straightforward. His agent, Joel Wolfe, hinted that Sasaki might be more inclined toward a smaller-market team for a smoother transition into Major League Baseball.
“I mean, I think that there’s an argument to be made that a smaller mid-market team might be more beneficial for him as a soft landing coming from Japan, given what he’s been through,” Wolfe shared at the MLB Winter Meetings.
Fresh off securing left-hander Max Fried with an eight-year, $218 million contract, the Yankees remain aggressive in their pursuit of elite pitching talent. Despite already having a formidable starting rotation, the team appears eager to bolster its roster further with the addition of Sasaki.

Yankees focused on Roki Sasaki
Reports suggest the Yankees have already allocated significant resources to scout Sasaki throughout the 2024 season.
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman confirmed the team’s keen interest, revealing that preparations are underway to present a compelling case to Sasaki. “Big arm with a big desire to be great,” Cashman stated, according to Brenden Kuty of The Athletic. “His intent is to be one of the game’s greatest pitchers on the planet. We certainly would love to participate in allowing that to happen.”
Sasaki, a lifelong admirer of former Yankees star Masahiro Tanaka, enters the market under unique circumstances. Since he was posted before turning 25, he is subject to international bonus pool restrictions rather than the more lucrative free-agent market. This has only intensified interest, with multiple MLB teams reportedly lining up with offers.
Landing Sasaki would elevate an already dominant Yankees rotation into one of the most formidable in baseball. With the team’s competitive spirit and history of luring international stars, all eyes will be on how this high-stakes pursuit unfolds in the coming weeks.
