Yankees ace Gerrit Cole delivered another strong performance on Friday against the Rays, despite a contentious start to the game. The pitcher nearly didn’t make it to the second inning due to a controversial pitch-clock violation.

The incident occurred when Gerrit Cole allegedly failed to throw his final warm-up pitch before the clock reached 20 seconds. Home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott immediately penalized the Yankees pitcher with an automatic ball, a decision that drew objections from Gerrit Cole, catcher Austin Wells, and manager Aaron Boone.

Gerrit Cole’s reaction was particularly heated, requiring Wells to intervene and calm him down before he managed to retire the side in order. Even after the Yankees’ 6-1 victory, during which he pitched six innings and allowed only one run, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner expressed lingering frustration with the call. However, he also commended Wolcott for maintaining composure during Gerrit Cole’s outburst and allowing him to continue pitching.

“I didn’t agree with [the call] and I did lose my composure,’’ he said. “Quinn didn’t and I’m thankful he kept me in the game.”

The pitcher admitted to losing his composure but expressed gratitude toward Wolcott for not ejecting him from the game. The incident visibly affected Gerrit Cole’s first pitch to Josh Lowe, a 97 mph four-seamer that went into the dirt. The ace acknowledged being fired up and struggling to regain his composure, using the entire pitch clock for his next throw.

“I was fired up,” Gerrit Cole said. “I was desperately trying to calm back down and then spiked a fastball in the dirt and used the whole clock.”

Wells played a crucial role in defusing the situation, helping Gerrit Cole maintain his focus on the mound. The catcher emphasized the importance of keeping everyone level-headed and ensuring the Yankees star remained in the game, noting the potential difficulties the team would face if their ace were removed. Wells praised Gerrit Cole’s professionalism and experience, stating that the pitcher understood his limits.

“Just try to keep him and everybody level-headed and keep him in the game for as long as he [was] because if he goes out, we’re in a bind,’’ the Yankees backstop said. “He’s a pro. He’s done it a long time. He knew his limits.”

Despite his efforts to calm Gerrit Cole, Wells admitted he was concerned about the possibility of Gerrit Cole being ejected. He recognized the pitcher’s competitive nature and desire to be on the field, as well as his frustration with the umpire’s call.

“A little bit, definitely,” Wells said. “He was hot. He wants to be out there. He’s a competitor and he wants to get the calls.”

Gerrit Cole cruises with ace credentials

Gerrit Cole’s performance on Friday night against the Rays built upon his previous strong showing against Baltimore, demonstrating a return to form for the Yankees’ ace. Over six innings, he displayed impressive command, yielding just one run on six hits and a single walk while racking up eight strikeouts.

The lone blemish on Gerrit Cole’s outing came in his final frame when Brandon Lowe connected for a leadoff homer. This minor setback aside, the reigning American League Cy Young winner appears to be regaining his elite form after missing a substantial portion of the season’s first half.

Gerrit Cole’s fastball velocity touched 97 mph, a promising sign for the Yankees. His performance helped lower his ERA from 5.40 to 4.60 in what was only his sixth start of the season. This improvement comes at a crucial time for the Yankees, who will heavily rely on a healthy and effective Cole as they navigate the second half of their campaign.

The right-hander’s recent outings have been particularly encouraging. Over his last 12 innings pitched, Gerrit Cole has allowed just two runs while striking out 15 batters. This level of dominance suggests that he is quickly shaking off any rust from his extended absence and reasserting himself as one of the league’s premier pitchers.

As the Yankees look to make a push in the competitive AL East, Gerrit Cole’s resurgence could prove pivotal. His ability to consistently deliver quality starts and eat innings will be crucial for the team’s pitching staff and their postseason aspirations.
