In his inaugural rookie ball appearance against the Florida Complex League Yankees on Tuesday, Torontos’ All-Star Alek Manoah faced a disastrous outing as he was thoroughly overwhelmed. The starter had previously angered the Yankees fans with verbal attacks on their ace Gerrit Cole and many see it as a revenge for that.
After being reassigned to the Florida Complex League on June 6, Manoah was surely hoping for a better start than what transpired on this occasion. But the Yankees rookies cut short Manoah’s outing to just 2.2 innings, during which he surrendered an alarming 11 earned runs on 10 hits, including two home runs. He managed to strike out three batters but also issued two walks.
During his debut full season in the previous year, Manoah showcased an impressive performance, accumulating a record of 16-7 with a remarkable 2.24 ERA across 196.2 innings. But his performance in 2023 has been a complete disappointment. With a record of 1-7 and an ERA of 6.36 in 13 starts, the right-handed pitcher endured a nightmarish season before being sent down by the Blue Jays.
In an attempt to help him regain his confidence, the Toronto Blue Jays made the decision to assign starting pitcher Alek Manoah to the Florida Complex League after his significant struggles this season. However, Manoah’s difficulties persisted in his first game since being demoted.
Manoah’s outing against the FCL Yankees on Tuesday didn’t go well as he surrendered 10 hits and 11 runs in just 2.2 innings. Predictably, this drew considerable attention from MLB fans on Twitter, particularly Yankees fans. As anticipated, Yankees fans didn’t hold back in criticizing Alek Manoah, and a few disappointed Blue Jays fans also joined in with their reactions. Let’s take a look at some of the responses.
As highlighted by Max Goodman of NJ Advance Media, the average age of the Yankees‘ rookie ball squad that dealt a heavy blow to Manoah is 18.8 years old.
