As the Yankees entered the sixth inning trailing the Mariners 1–0, Max Fried had already done his part. The left-hander allowed just one earned run over five innings, navigating through a difficult fourth and finishing strong to keep New York within striking distance.

Max Fried threw 91 pitches — 57 for strikes — and scattered four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. His ERA ticked up slightly to 1.11, a mark that still ranks among the league’s best.

Not his sharpest, but still what Yankees needed

It wasn’t the cleanest outing Max Fried has had in pinstripes, but it was the kind of performance that’s becoming a hallmark of his time in New York. Even when he doesn’t have his best stuff, he finds ways to limit damage and give his team a chance.

“That’s the best pitcher I’ve seen on the Yankees outside of Gerrit Cole in the last 10 years,” one fan wrote on social media during the game, summing up the growing appreciation for Fried’s consistency.

Another added, “This is his second-worst start as a Yankee and it’s still just one run over five innings.”

Max Fried’s ability to manage games, even when command or tempo isn’t perfect, has brought a level of reliability to a rotation that, in recent seasons, lacked it. One fan put it plainly: “Fried without his best stuff is still giving you outings the Yankees begged for in the past. Worth every penny.”

While Max Fried did his part, the Yankees’ offense has yet to solve Seattle’s pitching. Through six innings, they’ve been held scoreless, with few threats against Mariners starter Bryce Miller.

With the bullpen rested and Max Fried keeping it close, the Yankees still have time to mount a comeback. But they’ll need to find answers at the plate — or risk wasting another strong start from their new co-ace.
