The New York Yankees are reportedly targeting free-agent left-hander Brooks Raley, despite the 36-year-old recovering from Tommy John surgery.

According to The Athletic, Raley has engaged in discussions with multiple teams, including the Yankees and Chicago Cubs, but the potential signing has drawn significant criticism from fans and analysts.

Raley, who posted a 2.80 ERA over 54 2/3 innings with the Mets in 2023, underwent surgery in May 2024 and is not expected to return until at least July. While his past performance highlights his potential, some question whether the Yankees should prioritize an injured pitcher over a proven, healthy option.

Fans push for Tim Hill

Many fans believe the Yankees should focus instead on re-signing Tim Hill, who pitched for the team in 2023 before joining the Padres. Hill delivered a 3.30 ERA over 60 innings last season and held left-handed hitters to a .210 batting average, demonstrating his consistency in high-leverage situations.

On X (formerly Twitter), fans expressed their frustration with the team’s approach. “Just sign Hill,” one user wrote, echoing the sentiment of many others who are baffled by the Yankees’ apparent preference for Raley.

Another user asked, “Why gamble on an injured 36-year-old when Hill is ready to contribute immediately?”

These sentiments reflect a growing call for the Yankees to prioritize stability and reliability, especially with their bullpen lacking left-handed relievers.

Offseason strategy under scrutiny

The Yankees have made several high-profile moves this offseason, including signing Max Fried to a record-setting $218 million contract and acquiring two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams from the Brewers. They also traded for Cody Bellinger and added Paul Goldschmidt, bolstering their lineup with power and defensive upgrades.

Despite these additions, the bullpen remains a concern. The lack of a dependable left-handed reliever is particularly glaring, especially in a division dominated by left-handed hitters.

“Baseball is a young man’s game,” one user posted. “Why are we looking at Raley, who won’t pitch until July, instead of bringing back Hill, who has already proven himself?”

Raley’s risk vs. Hill’s reliability

While Raley’s 2023 season with the Mets showcased his effectiveness when healthy, his recovery timeline raises doubts about whether he can make an impact in 2025. Critics argue that the Yankees cannot afford to rely on a pitcher who may not be fully ready until midseason.

“Stability should be the priority,” one analyst said. “With left-handed hitters all over the division, the Yankees need someone they can count on from Day 1.”

Hill, by contrast, offers immediate availability and a track record of reliability. His ability to handle high-pressure situations makes him a logical fit for the team’s needs.

With spring training approaching, the Yankees face a critical decision in addressing their bullpen’s left-handed void. Raley offers potential upside but comes with significant risks, while Hill provides a safer, more immediate solution.

Fans continue to advocate for the return of Hill, urging the Yankees to avoid taking unnecessary chances. As the team’s offseason strategy comes under increasing scrutiny, the decision between the two pitchers could have far-reaching implications for the 2025 season.

How the Yankees handle this situation will likely shape their competitiveness in what promises to be a fiercely contested AL East. For now, the team’s approach remains a hot topic of debate among fans and analysts.
