The Yankees extra-inning failure in a heart-breaking fashion after a defensive gem highlighted the ongoing struggles of their young core. They failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities, particularly in tight games, where every at-bat carries enormous weight, for the third game in a row.

The 1-0, 11-inning setback against the Angels exposed the mental vulnerability of the Yankees rising core. In contrast, the Los Angeles’ rookie stars were able to seize the breakthrough moment and steal the win.

Extra-inning youth letdown for Yankees

The Monday night game at Yankee Stadium entered extra innings following a marathon pitcher’s duel. Clarke Schmidt delivered a masterful performance on the mound for the Yankees, blanking the Angels through 7 2/3 innings. His counterpart, Angels starter Jose Soriano, matched him pitch for pitch with seven shutout frames of his own.

The Yankees appeared poised to walk off in the ninth when Giancarlo Stanton ripped a leadoff double in his season debut. The slugger’s return provided immediate dividends, putting the tying run 90 feet away with nobody out.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone inserted Jasson Dominguez as a pinch runner for Stanton. Jazz Chisholm Jr. whiffed on a strikeout, leaving Dominguez anchored at second with one down.

The decisive moment arrived when Anthony Volpe chopped a ground ball toward third base while Dominguez broke for the bag. Angels third baseman Luis Rengifo executed a remarkable defensive sequence, positioning himself perfectly to field the bouncer while simultaneously applying the tag on the advancing Yankees runner.

The collision occurred as Rengifo’s glove secured the ball and Dominguez slid into third base. The simultaneous action created a razor-thin timing play that went against the Yankees on a batted ball rather than a traditional throw-and-tag scenario.

Rengifo absorbed contact on the play and went down momentarily but stayed in the contest. His outstanding defensive work potentially preserved the game for Los Angeles while recording the second out. Austin Wells completed the inning’s futility by striking out, forcing extra innings in what had been a scoreless battle.

The additional baseball proved costly for the Yankees. Nolan Schanuel delivered the game’s lone run with an RBI double in the top of the 11th inning. Rengifo capped his memorable night by fielding another grounder and stepping on third base for the final out, securing the Angels’ 1-0 victory with a much more routine play than his earlier heroics.

Brooklyn native realizes Stadium dream

Christian Moore experienced a fairy-tale evening in his hometown venue. The 22-year-old Brooklyn product’s stole the spotlight in his Yankee Stadium debut. The rookie’s heroics helped deliver the Yankees their fourth consecutive loss.

The Angels’ top prospect grew up rooting for the Yankees in Brooklyn but had never witnessed a game at Yankee Stadium. His Mets-fan father refused to take him. Monday night finally provided Moore’s first Stadium experience — and he made it count.

“It meant everything,” Moore said. “I was joking with my brother [C.J.] about it after that Baltimore series. He was like, ‘At least you’ll get your first hit in New York.’ And I said, ‘Well, I hope so. I got four games to do it.’

“But it felt good to get it today. It takes a lot of pressure off you as a player, and I just feel like now I belong a little bit. I got the first one, and now I can just play a little more free.”

Moore’s breakthrough triple came on Schmidt’s first offering in the eighth inning. He remained stranded but would impact the outcome later.

The rookie started the 11th inning as the automatic runner. Nolan Schanuel’s left-field double brought Moore home with the decisive run. Schanuel praised his teammate afterward.

“It’s awesome… I’ve been rooting for him ever since I got drafted, and then he got drafted by the same team the next year. So nothing but love.”

Moore also made a crucial defensive play aginst the Yankees in the bottom half. He threw out Paul Goldschmidt at home plate on a slow grounder, preserving the Angels’ advantage.

“Tough play,” Moore said. “It was sawed off and spinning weirdly and the weather and stuff. But just trying to give [Travis] d’Arnaud anything close to the tag zone so he can make a play.”

Boone defends Volpe’s approach

Anthony Volpe faced a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the 11th inning. He grounded out to third on reliever Hunter Strickland’s first pitch. Boone addressed questions about Volpe’s aggressive approach.

“Not necessarily,” Boone said. “The first pitch is the best one to hit sometimes. I didn’t see if it was off the plate or a good pitch to go after; that might be the case. But we gotta be ready to go there.”

Volpe finished 0-for-4 with one strikeout. His season line stands at .241/.315/.431 with eight homers across 70 games.

Another Yankees rookie will try to salvage the reputation on Tuesday. Will Warren (4-3, 4.86 ERA) is set to compete with Angels veteran Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 5.20 ERA).

But Monday’s loss proved that rookies have to seize their moments on baseball’s biggest stages.
