New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo is reportedly dealing with an unexpected issue that may be affecting his performance at the plate: an allergic reaction to his batting gloves. According to reports by NJ.com, the 28-year-old has been suffering from this condition for three seasons, which could be linked to his recent struggles.

Alex Verdugo, who joined the Yankees this season, has seen a sharp decline in his offensive performance, hitting .237 with 10 home runs and 52 RBIs through 117 games. This is a significant drop from his career average of .281. The issue came to light during the All-Star break when Verdugo visited a doctor in New York after enduring persistent sores and pain in his hands.

What happened

The Yankees’ medical team referred Alex Verdugo to an allergist, who determined that he is allergic to two chemicals commonly found in his Franklin batting gloves—cobalt and chromate. These chemicals are used in the dyeing and curing process of the gloves’ leather.

“You’re allergic to your batting gloves,” the doctor informed Verdugo, leaving the outfielder shocked. The diagnosis has raised concerns about whether this condition has contributed to Verdugo’s recent slump.

Alex Verdugo‘s situation is not entirely unique. Jasson Dominguez, the Yankees’ top prospect, has reported similar symptoms with his Nike batting gloves. Verdugo’s agent has since contacted Franklin Sports, the manufacturer of his gloves, seeking a solution.

The issue might extend beyond the gloves. Some experts suggest that Alex Verdugo’s extensive tattoos could be exacerbating the allergic reaction. Dr. Arthur Lubitz, a Manhattan-based allergist, speculated that the metal ink used in tattoos could be triggering an allergic response, especially when combined with the chemicals in the gloves.

In response, Franklin Sports has initiated efforts to create an alternative glove that eliminates the problematic chemicals. Meanwhile, Verdugo continues to play with taped fingers and wrapped palms, awaiting a solution.

This revelation adds a layer of complexity to Alex Verdugo’s season as he tries to regain his form. The Yankees, currently in a tight race for the playoffs, will be hoping that resolving this issue will help Verdugo contribute more effectively in the final stretch of the season.
