Jazz Chisholm Jr. appears to have avoided surgery for the time being. After consulting multiple doctors regarding their new third baseman’s UCL injury, the Yankees have opted for rest and rehabilitation rather than surgery, as confirmed by CBS this Friday.
Yankees hopeful for September return
The Yankees are hopeful that Jazz Chisholm will return to the lineup in September. The 26-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list after spraining his left (non-throwing) elbow while diving into home plate during a game against the Chicago White Sox on August 12.
An MRI conducted on Tuesday confirmed the injury, but the team waited for further medical opinions before deciding on a treatment plan. The decision to avoid surgery suggests a cautious approach, aiming to keep Jazz Chisholm available for the final stretch of the season.
Manager Aaron Boone said Jazz Chisholm is “pretty encouraged by how he’s feeling,” which he hopes is a good sign. However, Boone added that Jazz Chisholm has been shut down from all baseball activities for now, and it’s unclear when he’ll be able to resume swinging a bat.
Impact of Jazz Chisholm’s absence
Jazz Chisholm, who is under team control through 2026, made an immediate impact after being acquired from the Marlins, hitting seven home runs in 14 games with a .316 batting average and a 1.062 OPS.
While Jazz Chisholm is sidelined, the Yankees plan to cover third base with a combination of Oswaldo Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu, and Oswald Peraza. The team hopes this rotation will maintain stability on the field while Chisholm recovers.
The Yankees, in the midst of a playoff race, are counting on Jazz Chisholm’s recovery to provide a spark in September. His return to the lineup would significantly bolster their postseason push.
