The New York Yankees powered their way to a 7-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep and inching closer to clinching the AL East title. Home runs from Aaron Judge, Gleyber Torres, and Jasson Dominguez were key in the win, showcasing the Yankees’ formidable lineup.
With this win, the Yankees improve to 92-64, wrapping up their West Coast road trip and setting their sights on the final stretch of the season as they look to secure the division title.
Yankees’ special day at the Coliseum
For Aaron Judge, the game held special significance as it marked his final appearance at the Oakland Coliseum, a venue that has personal meaning for the Northern California native. Before the Athletics relocate to Sacramento and eventually Las Vegas, Judge added another milestone to his exceptional season. He launched his 55th home run of the year — his second in as many games — a towering shot to center field that solidified his major league lead in homers.
Judge also contributed a crucial double that helped spark a Yankees rally and scored another run, further fueling his MVP candidacy. Over his last 15 games, the Yankees captain has been on fire, posting a .327 average and a 1.109 OPS.
Jasson Dominguez, who has had a slow start since returning to the majors, put the Yankees on the board with a two-run homer in the second inning, his second of the season. Gleyber Torres also chipped in with a solo shot in the fifth, going 2-for-4 and raising his average to .325 this month.
On the other hand, Luis Gil struggled early, giving up two runs in the first inning but found his groove to throw 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking three, and striking out five. Ian Hamilton entered in the sixth and allowed two inherited runners to score, trimming the Yankees’ lead to 5-4.
Things got tense in the eighth when Clay Holmes put two runners on with no outs. Manager Aaron Boone turned to Luke Weaver, who shut down the Athletics to escape the jam and earned a five-out save, his fourth of the season.
