New York Yankees 7-0 Miami Marlins
The New York Yankees continued their hot start to the 2024 season, defeating the Miami Marlins 7-0 at Yankee Stadium on Monday night. The game lasted just two hours and one minute, making it the Yankees’ fastest game since June 2, 1992.
A day of eclipse and a night of records: The story before the Yankees defeat Marlins
Prior to the game, the Yankees players took time to watch the solar eclipse that passed over North America. Pitcher Nestor Cortes also made headlines with his flashy disco-inspired outfit, which teammate Clarke Schmidt said he would have to wear again if Cortes pitched a shutout.
“If Nestor pitches a shutout tonight, he’ll have to wear the same thing for his next start.” Said Schmidt an hour before the game.
Nestor Cortes delivered, tossing eight scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and no walks. He struck out six batters in the dominant performance. The left-hander, who grew up a Marlins fan in Florida, rose to the occasion against his former favorite team.
Anthony Volpe and Juan Soto lead Yankees to dominant win over Marlins
Offensively, the Yankees were led by homers from rookies Anthony Volpe and Juan Soto. Volpe belted a three-run shot in the fourth inning, while Soto followed with a three-run blast of his own later in the frame. The pair of long balls gave the Yankees a 6-0 lead.
Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ top prospect, continued his hot start to the season, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Soto, acquired in a trade during the offseason, finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout, recording his first home run at Yankee Stadium in pinstripes.
Alex Verdugo also had a solid night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk and driving in the Yankees’ seventh run with a fifth-inning single. Giancarlo Stanton, who has been heating up lately, ripped a double and singled in the win.
On the defensive side, Volpe made a couple of impressive plays, including a sliding catch in the second inning and a diving stop and throw across the diamond in the third. The Yankees also turned an inning-ending double play in the first, as Aaron Judge grounded into his 15th double play of the young season.
Josh Maciejewski shines in his Yankees’ debut
It was also a magical night for Josh Maciejewski, who was called up just before the game by the team. Maciejewski, a highly touted prospect, made his major league debut in the 9th inning, tossing a scoreless frame on just 4 pitches.
In his debut outing, the young right-hander recorded 1 walk and 5 strikeouts, holding opposing batters to a .125 average. The Yankees fans in attendance recognized the significance of Maciejewski’s debut, and the team’s official social media account highlighted his impressive performance.
A night to remember
The win improved the Yankees’ record to 9-2, matching their best 11-game start in franchise history (previously accomplished in 1922, 1933, 1949, 1953, 1988, 2003, and 2020). The Marlins, on the other hand, fell to 1-10, the worst record in Major League Baseball.
The two teams will face off again on Tuesday, with the Yankees sending left-hander Carlos Rodon to the mound against Miami’s AJ Puk. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Yankee Stadium.
Overall, it was a dominant performance by the Yankees, with Cortes leading the way on the mound and the offense providing more than enough support. The win showcases the team’s depth and talent, and they will look to carry this momentum forward as they continue their pursuit of another successful season.
