New York Yankees 6-2 New York Mets
Carlos Rodón extended his winning ways with his fourth straight victorious decision, and the New York Yankees capitalized on early Mets mistakes to secure a 6-2 victory Friday evening in the 2025 Subway Series kickoff at Yankee Stadium.
Before a capacity Bronx audience of 47,700, Paul Goldschmidt drove home two runners, Cody Bellinger gathered three hits, and the Yankees outperformed their city rivals to strengthen their home record while beginning a crucial interleague stretch with conviction.

Rodón controls Mets as Yankees strike early
Carlos Rodón (5-3) provided the Yankees with another reliable performance, yielding just two hits and one run through five frames. Though limited to 85 pitches, he recorded five strikeouts against a single walk, utilizing a crisp slider and precise fastball placement to neutralize a Mets lineup that arrived in the Bronx with considerable momentum.
The only run against Rodón came in the fourth, when Brandon Nimmo brought home Juan Soto with an RBI single — a sequence that represented Soto’s most significant contribution during an otherwise unremarkable homecoming to the Bronx.
Soto greeted with jeers — and free passes
Making his first appearance at Yankee Stadium since inking a record-breaking $765 million contract with the Mets, Soto encountered a wave of boos each time he approached the plate. Fans stood as he led off the opening inning, and Soto acknowledged the reception with a helmet tip and hand over his heart.
The former Yankee found limited success at the plate, going hitless in two official at-bats but drawing a season-high three walks, demonstrating his characteristic patience even amid a charged atmosphere. He flew out in the eighth with two runners aboard in what emerged as a crucial juncture for the Mets.
Goldschmidt, Bellinger Fuel Early Attack
The Yankees pounced on Mets starter Tylor Megill (3-4) during the third inning, transforming a close contest into a comfortable 4-0 advantage through a blend of opportune hitting and defensive lapses after Goldschmidt singled home the initial run, Francisco Lindor’s off-balance throw to first caromed off Pete Alonso’s glove, allowing a second run to cross.

Anthony Volpe contributed a sacrifice fly, and Oswaldo Peraza drew a bases-loaded walk as Megill’s command deteriorated. The right-hander expended 39 pitches in the second inning before departing after just 2 2/3 frames, issuing five walks — equaling a career high.
Relief Corps Solid in Playoff-Like Environment
The Yankees’ bullpen sustained its impressive form. Jonathan Loáisiga, making his first appearance since April 3, 2024, displayed sharpness in his return from Tommy John surgery, delivering a scoreless sixth with one hit and one strikeout.
Though Francisco Lindor connected for an RBI double off Yerry De Los Santos in the eighth, Luke Weaver entered to retire Soto on a center field flyout and closed matters in the ninth for his fifth save in six opportunities.
Key Moment & Stat
The decisive sequence occurred in the third inning when Lindor’s errant throw — his seventh miscue of the season — permitted a second run to score. That error unlocked the floodgates in what should have concluded as an inning-ending double play. The Yankees exploited the opportunity with two additional runs, converting a modest rally into a substantial four-run outburst.

Juan Soto’s three walks established a season high and reflected his disciplined approach, but his power absence during a highly anticipated Bronx homecoming became a prominent storyline. He has yet to collect an extra-base hit across his previous six contests.
