NEW YORK — Multiple reports have linked Tarik Skubal to the Yankees this winter. But the player’s latest move indicated a Bronx. snub
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden claimed that Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris “has told teams he expects Tarik Skubal to pitch for Detroit in 2026, but that hasn’t stopped him from listening on the two-time Cy Young Award winner.”
Bowden added that “the Yankees enter the 2026 season with two of their top starters, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, still working their way back from injuries.”
ESPN’s Jeff Passan also listed the Yankees as a possible destination. Several reports have outlined a proposed package that would require the Yankees to trade top prospects Spencer Jones, Carlos Lagrande and Bryce Cunningham along with right hander Will Warren for one year of Skubal under contract.
Former big league outfielder Cameron Maybin suggested that “the move that would take over the entire league is the Yankees going to get Skubal.”
Yet Skubal delivered a clear message to a Yankees fan last week. The moment went viral. It also showed that the Tigers ace has no interest in New York despite trade speculation.
Four words shut down Yankees’ Skubal hopes
Skubal attended MLB award events after winning his second straight American League Cy Young Award.
A fan approached him with a Yankees cap and asked for an autograph. Skubal declined immediately. “That’s not my hat, get outta here,” he said while waving the fan away.
The clip spread across social media within hours. Video from Woodward Sports Network showed Skubal turning aside the Yankees fan and then signing items for others nearby. The exchange took place on his twenty ninth birthday. It also sent a message about his view of the Yankees in the middle of trade rumors.

The Yankees remain focused on adding elite starting pitching. Cole and Rodon are returning from injuries. Max Fried has brought stability after his strong 2025 season. General manager Brian Cashman has searched for another front line arm all winter. But Skubal’s response to Yankees branding suggested he has a different direction in mind.
Detroit loyalty runs deep despite contract impasse
Skubal has said many times that he wants to stay with the Tigers. After winning his second Cy Young Award on November 13, he addressed both contract talks and rumors.
“Contract extension stuff is a little bit different, but trade stuff is out of my control,” Skubal said. “I’ve given everything I have to this organization. I want to be a Tiger for a very long time. I love Detroit. Hopefully, I’m here. That’s where I’m at with all of that.”
His approach at the autograph event backed up his words. Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg called him “an important piece” during the GM meetings in Las Vegas.
Detroit has been a different team with Skubal on the mound. They went 42 and 20 in his 62 starts across the last two seasons. They finished 131 and 131 in all other games. His presence changes their competitive level.
A long term extension remains difficult. Skubal is represented by Scott Boras. The two sides remain far apart on financial numbers. Reports indicate the gap between Detroit’s past offers and Skubal’s projected value is enormous.

Contract talks stall over massive numbers
Skubal becomes a free agent after the 2026 season. Industry projections place his value above 400 million dollars. That figure would make him the highest paid pitcher in the sport. It would surpass Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s 325 million dollar deal with the Dodgers.
The Tigers reportedly offered Skubal less than 100 million dollars over four years after his 2024 Cy Young win. That offer came nowhere near his projected market. No meaningful progress has been made since then.
Boras spoke at the GM meetings. “Our point of view is we always listen. We’re prepared to listen to about anything that Chris or really Scott has to say. We’ll just see how it goes.”
The agent also pushed Detroit publicly. “The fans in Detroit want the Tigers to build the Tarik barrack,” Boras said. “It should be Skooby done, right?”
Detroit must choose between extending him, trading him or letting him play out his contract. Harris has declined to discuss those options.
Yankees face uphill battle despite interest
Skubal’s reaction to the Yankees cap strengthened the belief he prefers staying in Detroit. It showed loyalty even as the Tigers struggle to match his value. His unwillingness to interact with Yankees gear suggested he does not envision himself in the Bronx.
The Yankees have more financial power than Detroit. They have a larger market and greater payroll capacity. But none of that matters if Skubal wants to stay with the team that drafted and developed him.
Jon Heyman said on November 19 that the Tigers still are not expected to trade Skubal.
“Do I think they’re going to trade him? Still doubtful,” Heyman said during a Bleacher Report stream. “I would hold on to him because they are a good team.”
Passan wrote that the “industry expectation” is that Detroit keeps Skubal for the 2026 season. Bob Nightengale also reported that the Tigers would need to be “completely overwhelmed” to consider moving him.
Skubal’s dominance backs up his confidence
Skubal earned his second Cy Young Award with a 2.21 ERA over 187 innings. He struck out 241 hitters. He produced a 7.6 WAR season. His 0.89 WHIP led the American League.
He became the first AL pitcher to win back to back Cy Young Awards since Pedro Martinez. His performance across two seasons confirmed his status as one of the best pitchers in baseball.
The Yankees need an arm like Skubal to stay competitive. Cole faces an uncertain timeline after Tommy John surgery. Rodon will not return until late May. Fried anchors the rotation but needs support.
Skubal would change their outlook. His left handed power would work well in Yankee Stadium. His postseason experience would help a team seeking its first World Series title since 2009.
But his message at the autograph table spoke louder than trade rumors. He does not appear interested in New York.
Message received by Yankees fans
The viral clip left Yankees fans little optimism. Those four words sent a loud message. Tigers fans celebrated the moment. It reinforced their belief that their ace wants to remain in Detroit.
The Yankees may still monitor his status. But his public stance creates a steep barrier. Players who want to join the Yankees often show excitement. Skubal showed the opposite.
His refusal to sign a Yankees cap on his birthday told the baseball world everything. He identifies as a Tiger. He wants to stay a Tiger. The Yankees must look elsewhere for rotation help.

Why would he want to sign another teams hat? It was lame on the person to ask.
