In a strategic lineup reconfiguration prompted by Giancarlo Stanton’s latest injury, the New York Yankees will move superstar Aaron Judge to the No. 2 spot in the batting order, manager Aaron Boone confirmed Tuesday.

The adjustment comes after Stanton was sidelined indefinitely with tennis elbow in both arms, forcing the Yankees to reevaluate their offensive approach heading into the 2025 season.

“Right now, I’m hitting [Judge] second,” Boone told Foul Territory in an interview that outlined the team’s revised batting strategy. The move returns Judge to a familiar position where he has historically excelled.

According to Baseball-Reference, Judge has compiled impressive statistics across 529 career games batting second: a .282 average with 173 home runs, 381 RBIs and a .992 OPS.

The repositioning of Judge creates a cascade of decisions for Boone regarding the remainder of the batting order. With the second spot now occupied, the Yankees must identify both a leadoff hitter and determine who will provide protection for Judge in the third position.

Anthony Volpe, who led off 77 games last season, emerges as a natural candidate to reprise that role. However, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Cody Bellinger also present compelling alternatives, with Boone suggesting either could potentially bat third depending on the leadoff selection.

“We’re still figuring out the best mix,” Boone acknowledged, indicating the Yankees will likely experiment with various combinations throughout spring training to identify their optimal configuration.

The designated hitter position represents perhaps the most significant vacancy following Stanton’s injury. Rather than relying on a single replacement, the Yankees appear poised to employ a rotating approach that leverages their roster depth.

When asked if players had expressed interest in hitting behind Judge, Boone replied, “I think they all have that,” suggesting a collective eagerness to step into expanded offensive roles.

Judge’s track record supports move

While Judge primarily hit third during the 2024 campaign, his return to the second spot leverages his proven track record in that role. The strategic advantage extends beyond Judge’s personal statistics, as the position typically generates more plate appearances over a full season.

This adjustment ensures the Yankees‘ most dangerous hitter will see more opportunities, particularly with runners on base if the leadoff position produces consistently. The move also creates potentially favorable matchups for whoever bats third, as pitchers must navigate Judge before facing the next threat.

The one potential drawback involves RBI opportunities, which could decrease without Stanton’s presence in the lineup. However, if the Yankees receive consistent on-base production from their leadoff hitter, Judge should maintain significant run-producing opportunities.

Stanton’s uncertain future

Stanton’s latest setback continues a troubling pattern of injuries that have plagued the slugger in recent seasons. The diagnosis of bilateral tennis elbow raises serious questions about his availability for 2025 and his long-term outlook with the organization.

While the Yankees have not provided a specific timeline for Stanton’s return, the indefinite nature of the injury suggests preparation for an extended absence.

The addition of veteran Paul Goldschmidt provides some insurance against Stanton’s unavailability, offering another proven middle-of-the-order bat. Additionally, young talents Austin Wells and Jasson Domínguez could see increased opportunities to establish themselves as key contributors.

Championship aspirations counts

Despite the lineup disruption, the Yankees maintain their status among World Series favorites heading into 2025. The team’s foundation remains strong with Judge, ace Gerrit Cole, and a pitching staff widely regarded as one of baseball’s deepest units.

The offseason acquisitions of Goldschmidt and Bellinger have added versatility to the roster, while the continued development of Volpe and Domínguez provides upside potential that could help offset Stanton’s absence.

Should internal options struggle to replace Stanton’s production, General Manager Brian Cashman has demonstrated willingness to pursue midseason reinforcements when championship opportunities present themselves.

For now, the focus remains on optimizing the available talent. Judge’s move to the second spot represents the first significant adjustment in what could be an evolving approach to lineup construction throughout the season.

As the Yankees prepare for Opening Day, Boone’s reshuffled batting order will face immediate scrutiny from a fanbase with championship expectations. How effectively the team adapts to Stanton’s absence could ultimately determine whether those expectations are realized when October arrives.
