The Yankees’ outfield could soon feature Spencer Jones, another physical marvel alongside its existing giants.

While Giancarlo Stanton works toward returning from injury and Aaron Judge continues his offensive onslaught, New York might introduce a third imposing slugger to the mix: 6-foot-7 prospect Spencer Jones.

Yankees beat writer Bryan Hoch reports the organization is considering a post-All-Star break promotion for Jones, currently ranked as the organization’s No. 3 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Though the timeline appears aggressive at first glance, team insiders believe it remains attainable—particularly if he maintains his development trajectory.

“It’s a projection that feels optimistic on paper, but not if Jones continues to look as ‘dangerous’ as he did in flashes this spring,” Hoch noted.

Jones, 23, begins the 2025 campaign with Double-A Somerset, indicating the Yankees still see developmental hurdles to clear. Nevertheless, the young outfielder has implemented several subtle yet meaningful adjustments that could expedite his arrival in the Bronx—beginning with equipment modifications designed to maximize his natural power.

Spencer Jones transitions to torpedo bat

During spring training, Jones transitioned to a torpedo bat—a contemporary model engineered to improve barrel control and contact quality. The switch came after analysis revealed his previous equipment wasn’t optimizing his physical attributes.

The rookie explained the reasoning behind the change: “They showed me where my barrel was—was like 20th percentile of barrel size of bats. It’s like, why am I using a bat with a tiny barrel when I could maximize it? It’s like it’s obvious for me to use a bigger barrel.”

After approximately a week with the new equipment, Jones already noticed performance differences.

“There’s some balls I feel like I got jammed and it was a lot of barrel. I mean, that’s a good feeling. The ones where it doesn’t hurt the hands as much. It’s actually off the barrel and flying,” he observed.

Yankees player development staff believe this equipment change, coupled with offseason mechanical adjustments, will address Jones’ contact challenges. His 29.8% strikeout rate across High-A and Double-A in 2024 raised concerns despite otherwise productive numbers.

Impressive toolkit with refinement needed

Jones’ 2024 statistics with Somerset demonstrated considerable promise: a .259 batting average, a .336 on-base percentage, and a .452 slugging percentage, complemented by 17 home runs and 78 RBIs across a full season. These figures, combined with exceptional speed and raw power potential, establish him among the organization’s most physically gifted prospects.

Selected 25th overall in the 2022 draft from Vanderbilt University, Jones possesses a rare combination of attributes that excite evaluators. While his stature rivals Judge and Stanton, he brings surprising athleticism rarely found in players of his size. Scouts consistently rate him as an above-average defender and baserunner—providing greater versatility than typical power-focused prospects.

Nevertheless, his plate approach remains the determining factor in his promotion timeline.

Jones identified his offseason objectives simply: “Make more contact, see better pitches, make better decisions, and hit the ball in the air a little bit [more].”

Accelerated pathway to pinstripes

Should Jones demonstrate improved pitch recognition and reduced strikeouts during the first half of 2025, he could earn advancement to Triple-A Scranton—potentially setting the stage for a big-league debut later this season.

His path to the majors faces minimal positional roadblocks. While Judge commands right field and Stanton typically occupies the designated hitter role, left field lacks a long-term solution. If Jones proves capable of making consistent contact, his left-handed swing and defensive versatility could complement a Yankees outfield rotation featuring Judge, Jasson Domínguez, Grisham, and Bellinger—strengthening the team’s competitive position.

The Yankees entered 2025 with legitimate championship aspirations and have already showcased exceptional offensive firepower in April. After connecting for 15 home runs during one weekend series against Milwaukee, the club has clearly reclaimed its “Bronx Bombers” identity—an approach Jones could further enhance.

Development before promotion

Yankees supporters anticipating Jones’ arrival should remember the developmental milestones still ahead. Despite his potential, he must demonstrate Double-A dominance before receiving major league consideration. An August promotion would require sustained improvement in contact quality and situational hitting—priority areas for both player and organization in 2025.

Nevertheless, enthusiasm surrounding his equipment changes, refined swing mechanics, and physical attributes has captured the front office’s attention.

As Hoch concluded, the projection may appear ambitious, “but not if Jones continues to look as ‘dangerous’ as he did in flashes this spring.”
