BALTIMORE — Trent Grisham supplied every run. Carlos Rodon made the attention-grabbing return. George Lombard Jr. produced another highlight at shortstop.

But one of the most important moments in the Yankees’ 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night belonged to Spencer Jones.

Jones did not make a spectacular diving catch. He did something less dramatic and arguably just as important. He secured Pete Alonso’s hard line drive to right field with two Orioles aboard in the seventh inning, ending Baltimore’s biggest late threat and protecting the two-run lead New York had just created.

For a rookie whose immense power has dominated the conversation since he reached the majors, the play offered another reminder of what Jones can give the Yankees even when his bat does not decide the game.

Jones answers Baltimore’s biggest threat

The Yankees had finally broken a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh.

Spencer Jones opened the inning with a single, George Lombard Jr. followed with another hit and the Yankees eventually loaded the bases. Grisham then fought back from an 0-2 count against left-hander Josh Walker and lined a two-run single that scored Jones and Lombard for a 3-1 lead.

Baltimore immediately threatened to erase it.

Brent Headrick allowed the first two Orioles to reach in the bottom half. He recovered to record two outs, but a 10-pitch walk to Christian Franklin prolonged the inning and convinced Aaron Boone that the matchup had reached its breaking point.

Boone summoned Fernando Cruz specifically for Alonso.

The matchup carried obvious danger. One mistake could have tied the game with one swing.

Cruz attacked Alonso with a four-seam fastball. Alonso squared it up and drove the ball hard toward right field.

Jones handled it.

“He ends up smoking the ball to right, but I felt like we had some margin there,” Boone said.

Jones caught the liner around neck level and stranded both runners. Instead of Baltimore cutting into the lead or putting the tying run in motion, the Yankees walked back to the dugout still ahead 3-1.

Paul Blackburn then worked a scoreless eighth before David Bednar retired the side in the ninth for his 28th save.

Jones contributes without needing a blast

Jones’ seventh inning illustrated why the Yankees continue to give the rookie meaningful playing time during a pennant race.

He helped create the winning rally with his bat and legs, then helped preserve it with his glove.

That combination has always formed a significant part of Jones’ prospect profile. The 1.98-meter outfielder built his reputation around unusual power for his size, but the Yankees have also valued the athleticism that allows him to cover significant ground in the outfield. MLB Pipeline previously noted that his range and arm strength gave him the tools to remain an outfielder long term rather than becoming a bat-only prospect.

The Yankees used Jones in right field Tuesday, with Grisham in center.

That versatility matters even more with Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton still working toward returns. New York has needed its younger players to contribute in ways that extend beyond home-run production.

Jones did exactly that in Baltimore.

His offensive numbers have cooled in August. Statcast lists him at .170 with a .562 OPS this month through Tuesday, but he has continued to show unusual production in higher-leverage situations. He is hitting .318 with a 1.035 OPS with runners in scoring position this season.

Tuesday offered a different form of leverage.

He did not need to hit with runners in scoring position. He needed to prevent Baltimore from cashing them in.

Yankees keep winning on tiny margins

The play carried additional weight because New York had almost no offensive cushion.

The Yankees managed only five hits and struck out 14 times. Grisham accounted for all three runs with his third-inning homer and seventh-inning single. Baltimore managed four hits but stranded eight runners and finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Rodon also gave New York only four innings in his first major league start since June 28. Yerry De Los Santos, Headrick, Cruz, Blackburn and Bednar had to cover the remaining five innings without allowing Baltimore another run.

That made every defensive out matter.

Lombard drew the loudest reaction with his exceptional play behind Rodon earlier in the game. Jones’ catch lacked the same degree of difficulty or viral appeal.

Its timing, however, made it difficult to overlook.

The Yankees had finally manufactured a two-run advantage. Baltimore had two runners aboard. Boone had changed pitchers specifically to confront one of the Orioles’ most dangerous hitters.

Alonso made the contact Baltimore wanted.

Jones made sure nothing came of it.

For a Yankees team still winning games with little room for mistakes, that quiet contribution mattered almost as much as anything that appeared in the scoring summary.
