NEW YORK — Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Astros is vital both for the Yankees and their newly appointed first baseman Jake Bauers. With a powerful swing, the 27-year-old launched his 11th home run of the season, a remarkable feat achieved in just 59 games. The pivotal moment occurred in the fifth inning, propelling the Yankees ahead and securing their lead for the rest of the game.

It was a particularly special hit as Jake Bauers had a rather challenging history against Houston’s Justin Verlander, with a record of 2-for-15 and six strikeouts in their previous encounters. However, this time, he seized the opportunity when presented with a well-placed slider and sent it soaring into the second deck of the right field.

In an offense that had been relatively quiet, Jake Bauers’ bat has emerged as a necessity, and his versatility in the field has been a valuable asset. For a significant portion of the year, he had been stationed in the corner outfield, where he had skillfully adapted over the past few seasons.

The dynamics changed when Anthony Rizzo suffered from post-concussion syndrome, leading to Jake Bauers’ inclusion in four consecutive starts at first base, showcasing his ability to adapt and perform effectively at various positions.

“He’s been really good,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told admiring Jake Bauers. “Kind of been a revelation for us, and I think a very interesting player moving forward.”

Until left-handed hitter Jake Bauers made it to the major league team, Boone didn’t really see him as someone who could make a big difference for the Yankees. However, he has shown his strong hitting skills bringing his career back to life in 2023.

Boone mentioned on Saturday morning that it wasn’t during spring training that he started to see Jake Bauers’ potential impact. It was actually right after Bauers joined the major league team. He had been performing well in Triple-A, and reports indicated that he was making a significant impact on the game.

By that time, Jake Bauers had been performing exceptionally well in both the Grapefruit League, which is part of spring training and the beginning of the Triple-A regular season. He had a .407 batting average in spring games and continued his success with a .359 average and a high OPS in Triple-A games. Because of this strong performance, Jake Bauers was called up to the major league team at the end of April.

After Jake Bauers hit a home run in his first game as a Yankee at Yankee Stadium and then hit another powerful home run that landed in the bullpen in left-center field a week later, Boone finally understood the talent and potential that he had on his team.

Before this year, Jake Bauers’ history is well-known. He was considered one of the top five promising players in the Rays’ development system for a while before his much-anticipated debut in 2018. However, when he finally reached the major leagues, he didn’t perform as well as expected. Jake Bauers had a batting average of only .213 and an OPS of .655. He hit 27 home runs in a total of 328 games over parts of three seasons, moving from Tampa Bay to Cleveland and then Seattle.

Last summer, he wasn’t confident about returning to the Major Leagues while playing for the Reds’ Triple-A team. But things changed when he was traded to the Yankees on June 3, 2022, in exchange for some money. This marked a new phase in his career. He embraced the Yankees’ approach to hitting and believed in his new coaches. Soon, his performance started improving, along with his confidence.

The beginning of a glittering Yankees career

Two weeks after his initial appearance as a Bronx Bomber, Jake Bauers showcased his prowess by belting an impressive opposite-field home run that soared 420 feet into the Yankee Stadium bullpen, situated beyond the left-center wall. This achievement was particularly extraordinary for a left-handed hitter.

The remarkable 420-foot blast, which occurred on May 9, caught the keen eye of Yankees manager Aaron Boone, prompting him to increasingly rely on the 27-year-old journeyman over the subsequent months.

Originally summoned to fill the void in the Yankees’ left field, Jake Bauers has now found himself back in his primary position of first base, following the sudden absence of Anthony Rizzo due to post-concussion syndrome. As a result, Jake Bauers has been granted the opportunity to make three consecutive starts at first base, commencing with the game against the Houston Astros on Saturday, after Rizzo was placed on the injured list last Thursday.

According to Boone, Jake Bauers has been quite a revelation for the team. The manager believes that he’s an intriguing player for the future. He also mentioned how hitting the bullpen in the left-center field as a left-handed batter is quite challenging and unique.

As Aaron Hicks struggled and eventually left the team, Oswaldo Cabrera’s performance declined, and Anthony Rizzo had a tough season, which got worse when he got injured with post-concussion syndrome, all of these situations affected the team’s plans. These unexpected events provided an opportunity for Jake Bauers to join the major league team and stay there, giving him a chance to earn regular playing time.

After that, he continued to perform well, achieving a batting average of .235 along with a .821 OPS and hitting 11 home runs in 59 games while playing for the Yankees. One remarkable moment was when Jake Bauers hit a powerful home run into the second deck during a game against the Astros on Saturday. This home run not only gave the Yankees the lead but was also his second home run in just two consecutive days.

Jake Bauers’ talent for hitting powerful shots from the left side has turned him into one of the Yankees’ most important batters this entire season. Out of his recent 33 hits, a significant 23 of them have resulted in extra bases. In his last 38 games, Jake Bauers has achieved a .581 slugging percentage, which shows his ability to create scoring opportunities. His 122 wRC+ is the second-highest among Yankees players this season, with only Aaron Judge ahead of him.

Just one more home run from Jake Bauers, and he will reach the same number of home runs he hit in a single season, which was his highest so far. This happened back in 2019 when he played for Cleveland. During that year, it took him 117 games and 423 plate appearances to hit twelve home runs. But now, in the year 2023, he’s already hit eleven home runs in just 191 plate appearances.

No one in the organization was expecting him to perform that well. Boone commented that he hadn’t really anticipated such a development. He mentioned that Jake Bauers has been showing a consistent ability to have quality at-bats and is a genuine threat to opponents on the field. Boone also expressed that, considering what Jake Bauers has displayed and the way he’s managed through difficult times, it’s apparent that he has a bright future ahead and has grown as a player.

In the future, Jake Bauers is expected to play a significant role for the team as they aim to improve their chances of making the playoffs. With Rizzo’s absence and Judge returning from injury, the Yankees currently lack a regular left fielder.

While Rizzo is on the injured list, Jake Bauers can go back to playing first base, which is his usual position, according to Boone. Although he has also improved in the outfield, his ability to play in different positions makes him a potential player to consider for next year if he maintains his strong performance as a left-handed hitter.

Expressing his feelings after Saturday’s victory, Jake Bauers remarked that it holds significant meaning for him. He mentioned that it’s a big deal and represents his dream coming true. Being able to contribute to the team’s success, especially with the New York Yankees, holds immense value for him, and he emphasized that he won’t overlook or underestimate the opportunity.
