The New York Mets have acquired Venezuelan catcher Luis Torrens from the New York Yankees in a bid to strengthen their roster for the remainder of the 2024 Major League Baseball season. Torrens has been added to the Mets’ 40-man roster and is expected to make his debut this Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Yankees trade Luis Torres to Mets
With this deal, the Yankees trade Luis Torrens for $100,000. Despite not being called up by the Yankees this season, Torrens has shown promise in the minor leagues, boasting a .279 batting average with 31 hits, 5 home runs, 19 RBIs, and 17 runs scored.
The move was reported by SNY on social media, where it was revealed that Luis Torrens was added to the roster along with two other players as part of a series of changes aimed at improving the team’s performance. This roster shake-up comes as a response to the offensive struggles of catcher Omar Narvaez, who has been designated for assignment by Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.
Narvaez, also a Venezuelan catcher, has had a tough season, hitting just .154 with 10 hits, 5 RBIs, and 4 runs in 65 at-bats. His offensive slump has left him without a place in the majors, making him available for any team to claim.
Two months ago, Luis Torrens expressed his pride and excitement about signing with the Yankees in an interview with Sports Venezuela. “I wanted to work on my defense to help me stay here,” Luis Torrens said on March 17. He was ready to start the season and had big plans for his future with the team. However, despite his aspirations, he hasn’t been called up this season.
Now, with the Mets signing Luis Torrens to boost their roster, he has the chance to showcase any improvements he has made. Meanwhile, the Yankees are focused on maintaining their hot streak in MLB.
