The Yankees find themselves locked in intense negotiations with Juan Soto, battling stiff competition from teams like the Mets. While Hal Steinbrenner reportedly left a strong impression on the superstar during their recent meeting, Soto may ultimately be drawn to the highest bidder. With the Mets willing to spend big, the Yankees must prepare for a backup plan if Soto opts for Queens.

Exploring plan B: Four star players under consideration

Bob Klapisch of NJ.com reports that Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman are quietly exploring alternatives. Among the potential targets are Corbin Burnes, Alex Bregman, Christian Walker, and Anthony Santander. While acquiring all four is unrealistic, a combination could address key roster gaps.

Burnes, who posted a stellar 2.92 ERA over 194.1 innings for the Orioles in 2024, remains one of MLB’s top arms despite declining strikeout numbers. The 30-year-old offers durability and elite ground-ball rates, making him an attractive addition to the Yankees’ rotation. Projected to command a $200 million deal, Burnes would slot behind Gerrit Cole and provide a long-term ace option. However, the Yankees may hesitate to make such a significant financial commitment.

Bregman, a longtime Yankees nemesis with the Astros, brings elite defense and a potent bat. In 2024, he hit .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 118 wRC+, excelling both offensively and defensively. While his seven-year, $185.5 million projected deal presents concerns about long-term value, Bregman’s consistency at the hot corner would elevate the Yankees’ infield immediately.

With Anthony Rizzo’s option declined, Walker emerges as a strong candidate for first base. The 33-year-old boasts Gold Glove-caliber defense, a .998 fielding percentage, and steady offensive production, including 26 home runs and a 119 wRC+ in 2024. Likely available on a shorter-term deal (around three years, $60 million), Walker addresses a critical need while maintaining payroll flexibility.

Santander’s 44-home run campaign in 2024 highlights his offensive upside. However, his .235 batting average and defensive liabilities could deter the Yankees from committing to a long-term deal. While his switch-hitting bat adds versatility, the team might prefer more well-rounded options for the outfield.

The Yankees face budgetary limitations, with Soto projected to command $50 million annually and an offseason spending cap around $60 million. Creative moves, such as trading Marcus Stroman to free up $18.5 million, could pave the way for signing Burnes alongside position players like Walker and Santander.

Prioritizing roster needs

Walker and Santander offer practical solutions for first base and the outfield, addressing glaring holes in the lineup. While Burnes would be a costly but impactful rotation addition, Bregman’s fit depends on the team’s confidence in Caleb Durbin at second base.

If Soto lands elsewhere, the Yankees’ Plan B provides a pathway to contention. By strategically targeting players like Burnes, Walker, and Santander, the team can strengthen critical areas without compromising long-term flexibility.
