Red Sox fans feel Yankees’ Nestor Cortes too nasty for Boston

Nestor Cortes’ career with the Yankees has taken off like a rocket last season, and he had many firsts in his career, including, an All-Star appearance in 2022. But that has not gone down well with baseball fans in Boston and they hate him the most for his ability to light up the Yankees vs Red Sox rivalry and fast becoming a darling of Bombers’ fans.

The Yankees traded Nestor Cortes twice before signing him for a minor contract in 2021. When he thought that his career was over, the lefty turned out to be the Yankees‘ most reliable pitcher.  According to ESPN Stats and Info:

“Nestor Cortes is the 4th different Yankees starting pitcher in the postseason in the Wild Card Era (since 1995) to allow 1 or 0 runs in 5 innings pitched on three days rest. The others: Gerrit Cole, C.C. Sabathia, and Andy Pettitte.”

In a recent podcast on Talkin’ Yankees!, MLB podcasters talked about the sudden improvement of Nestor Cortes and how it has made fans of other teams feel scared of him. They think that his success is the reason why Red Sox fans hate him so much. Nestor Cortes’ success seems to have surprised Red Sox fans, who didn’t think much of him before his breakout as a top Yankees starter.

In 2022, Nestor Cortes’ first year as a full-time starter, he had a great season. He struck out 26.5% of the time and walked 6.2% of the time, both of which were well above average. Nestor Cortes has done enough to earn a regular spot on the team’s roster for the 2023 season.

It’s an amazing story for someone who was put on waiver by the Orioles in 2018 and had a terrible ERA of 6.66 in 2019 and 2020. Even the worst baseball team at the time, the 2018 Orioles, didn’t want him. Four years later, Cortes has changed into a pitcher who can be counted on not only in a winner-take-all game but also for one of the most-watched teams in the sport at Yankee Stadium, which is like a pressure cooker.

MLB podcasters disclosed that Nestor Cortes Jr. is hated by Red Sox fans because he has done better than expected. He wasn’t much of a threat when he first started playing with the Baltimore Orioles and when he joined the Yankees. But now he is third on the Yankees rotation and fans see him as one of the best hopes for the team in its quest to win the long-elusive title this year.

“Jomboy,” who is a co-host of the podcast, told:

“It’s very interesting coz when a guy does get good out of nowhere, they saw him with the Orioles they saw him with Yankees early. … like wait a second, I have to be scared of this guy now? And the whole league was a little bit like that all of last season.”

“Talkin’Jake” nodded in agreement:

“You look at Nestor throw a 93 mph fastball and you’re like, what!? I guess I didn’t really put together that Red Sox fans hate Nestor. He’s like our overachiever.”

Everyone can connect to Nestor Cortes. Because of his height and weight—5 feet 11 inches and 210 pounds, respectively—he appears to be more of a fan than a professional athlete, especially when he enters the bar wearing a jersey for the Miami Dolphins.

He was put on the waiver, released, and traded for money to spend on others. Despite all these discouraging steps, Nestor Cortes just kept playing baseball and did a few things to help him play better. He picked up a few miles per hour, stopped trying to fit in, and got fitter by working out with trainer Andre Enrique at Zoom Fitness in Miami. Cortes had one goal and one interest. He always says that after each release, he never thought about doing anything else. In his head and heart, he will always and only ever be a pitcher.

Nestor Cortes is sure to fire up the Yankees against the Red Sox

In the upcoming MLB season, the New York Yankees will play the Boston Red Sox on July 9. Nestor Cortes will be looking forward to it since Red Sox fans don’t like him and the Yankees fans want him to be their flag bearer.

With his unique style of pitching, Nestor Cortes throws a low-90s fastball and a slider that has been very hard for batters to hit. As Red Sox fans watched their team struggle against Cortes on the field, the fans in New York are likely to hail the legend of Nasty Nestor.

As we head into spring training before the new season starts, the Yankees and Red Sox will try to keep up their long-standing rivalry, and Nestor Cortes will probably be in the middle of it.
