Everson Pereira is making the Yankees’ roster decisions increasingly difficult this spring, showcasing the raw power and improved plate discipline that once made him one of the organization’s most promising outfield prospects.

The 23-year-old Venezuelan, who struggled mightily during his 2023 major league debut, has undergone a remarkable transformation at the plate early in camp. Through his first nine spring training plate appearances, Pereira has posted an impressive .333/.556/.833 slash line, highlighted by Tuesday’s opposite-field home run against the Minnesota Twins that demonstrated his natural power.

“I don’t want to think about my spot in the organization at this moment,” Pereira said, reflecting on his approach following a rehabilitative offseason. “I’m just coming from rehab. I just want to get as healthy as I can to compete. I lost a year. I don’t want it in my mind thinking about if I go to the big leagues or Scranton this year. I just want to be ready when the team needs me.”

Rebounding from major league struggles

Pereira’s newfound confidence marks a significant turnaround from his initial taste of major league action in 2023 when he struggled to a .151/.233/.194 batting line over 103 plate appearances while striking out at an alarming 38.8% rate.

Those struggles weren’t entirely unexpected given the significant leap from Triple-A to the major leagues, but they temporarily dampened enthusiasm around a player long celebrated for elite bat speed and defensive versatility. Rather than allowing those difficulties to define him, Pereira has used them as motivation for substantial adjustments to his approach at the plate.

“He really impacts the baseball. He’s a good defender in the outfield. Good two-way player. He’s a guy that I could very much see in the mix at some point, especially (being a) right-handed bat,” a Yankees source said of Pereira’s development.

Internal evaluators have also noted physical changes that may contribute to his improved performance: “He’s in terrific shape. He’s got himself in really good shape. Over the last year while going through this, he’s kind of changed his body composition a little bit,” another team source observed.

Roster crunch creates a difficult situation

Pereira’s resurgence comes at a critical juncture for both the player and the organization. With Giancarlo Stanton sidelined indefinitely with a bilateral tennis elbow, the Yankees have a potential opening at designated hitter that could create roster space for an additional position player.

However, the path to regular playing time remains complicated by the Yankees’ established outfield alignment. Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Jasson Domínguez appear locked into starting roles, with Trent Grisham secured as the fourth outfielder, leaving Pereira to compete for limited at-bats.

Working against Pereira is a remaining minor league option, giving the Yankees flexibility to start him at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre without risk of losing him to another organization. Yet his early spring performance raises legitimate questions about whether the organization would be best served keeping his bat in the Bronx.

Key evaluation areas remain

While Pereira’s early spring results have impressed evaluators, several weeks remain before Opening Day roster decisions must be finalized. During this crucial evaluation period, the Yankees will focus on three critical areas to determine if Pereira has truly addressed his previous major league difficulties:

  • Plate discipline – His previous 38.8% strikeout rate represented an unsustainable figure for a major league contributor. His ability to recognize breaking pitches and layoff offerings outside the strike zone will be closely monitored.
  • Contact consistency – Beyond raw power, Pereira needs to demonstrate he can consistently handle quality pitching, particularly as opposing teams begin using their regular season rotation members deeper into spring games.
  • Defensive versatility – While his primary value may come offensively, Pereira’s ability to capably defend all three outfield positions could significantly strengthen his case for a roster spot.

Opening Day prospects dim for Pereira

The Yankees‘ ultimate decision regarding Pereira remains several weeks away, with performance in the latter stages of spring training likely carrying significant weight. At a minimum, his early success has positioned him as a prime call-up candidate should injuries create opportunities after Opening Day.

If Stanton’s absence extends into the regular season, Pereira’s right-handed power becomes increasingly valuable to a Yankees lineup that would otherwise skew heavily left-handed against certain pitching matchups.

By focusing on preparation rather than roster politics, Pereira has adopted the ideal mindset to maximize his development. Whether that translates to an Opening Day assignment in the Bronx or additional seasoning in Scranton, his resurgence represents a potential depth advantage for a Yankees organization with championship aspirations in 2025.
