Domingo German’s departure from the New York Yankees could be the next big move as the Bronx Bombers stand at a critical juncture this offseason, confronted with a crucial choice concerning their roster makeup for the upcoming season. The lackluster performance in 2023, resulting in a mere 82 wins, has highlighted the necessity for substantial enhancements if the Yankees aim to make a triumphant comeback to the postseason in 2024. Despite possessing considerable talent on paper, their hopes of clinching the World Series in 2023 fell short, primarily due to a barrage of injuries and an overall team underperformance.

Should Domingo German leave the Yankees?

As the upcoming offseason approaches, the New York Yankees are firmly committed to strengthening their roster, with a keen focus on fortifying their batting lineup and enhancing their pitching staff. The anticipated changes in the offseason will necessitate acquiring fresh talent. Notably, there are strong indications that Domingo German, a pitcher with a controversial past, may not be part of the Yankees’ future plans. This revelation comes from a report by SNY’s Phillip Martinez.

Domingo German’s off-the-field issues have increasingly raised doubts about his future with the Yankees. Martinez points out, “The off-the-field issues surrounding Domingo German make it increasingly likely that the Yankees will opt not to tender him a contract. While there have been moments of promise, the emergence of new talents within the pitching rotation could offset Domingo German’s absence. Moreover, the funds that would have been allocated to German might be redirected towards reinforcing the team’s offensive capabilities and addressing weaknesses in the bullpen.”

Domingo German, currently in the arbitration-eligible phase of his career, faces an uncertain future with the Yankees. His on-field performance has been marked by inconsistency, with flashes of brilliance contrasting with periods of mediocrity, as demonstrated by his 4.56 ERA in 20 appearances during the 2023 season. Beyond his on-field struggles, German’s tenure with the Yankees has been tarnished by a series of off-the-field controversies, most notably a suspension in 2019 for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. With the 2024 season on the horizon, it appears that the Yankees may be considering parting ways with this polarizing pitcher.

In 2023, Germán found himself on the restricted list for the second time in his Yankees career. When spring training began, he was vying for the fifth spot in the Yankees’ rotation, behind established pitchers like Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and Frankie Montas. While Rodon and Montas were not available at the start of the season, Cortes’ season was cut short. The Yankees leaned on German in the early part of the season, and he performed solidly, recovering after a rocky April. He even achieved a remarkable feat by pitching a perfect game in June, becoming the 24th player in MLB history to do so.

However, Domingo German’s off-the-field issues resurfaced, leading to his season being cut short. With six seasons under his belt with the Yankees, Domingo German’s tenure has been a mix of good and bad. In 2018, he had a 5.57 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in 21 games, 14 of which he started. His career year came in 2019, with an impressive 18-4 record, a 4.03 ERA, and a 1.15 WHIP. He missed the entire 2020 season due to off-the-field problems, which will be discussed shortly. Germán aimed to bounce back after subpar seasons in 2021 and 2022, where he made a combined 32 starts with ERAs of 4.58 and 3.61, respectively.

Domingo German is projected to have a salary of $4.4 million after arbitration, which is reasonable. However, with several potential starters already on the roster, re-signing him may not be justifiable, especially considering his history.

One significant factor influencing the Yankees’ decision is Domingo German’s suspension in 2019 for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy. The Yankees granted him a second chance, but he subsequently faced an incident that led to his entry into inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. While there is hope that Germán receives the help he needs, this is the second time he has let down his teammates.

Why should the Yankees consider to retaining Domingo German?

On the other hand, there are reasons to consider retaining Domingo German. At the beginning of the 2023 season, the Yankees faced a shortage of starting pitchers. German provided a veteran presence that manager Aaron Boone could rely on. When Rodon and Montas were unavailable, and Clarke Schmidt struggled, Germán was a consistent arm that helped the team through the initial months of the season. In the first two months of the year, he had a solid start, going 3-3 with a 3.98 ERA.

Although he faced some challenges after May, his perfect game showcased his potential. If Domingo German is healthy and returns to the team in 2024, he could be a valuable depth option in both the rotation and the bullpen. Schmidt, Rodon, and Cortes are all question marks for the upcoming season, and Michael King may still require time to adapt to his role as a starter.

In conclusion, the Yankees are faced with a difficult decision regarding Domingo German. Unfortunately, his off-the-field issues provide compelling reasons for the Yankees to non-tender his contract. While there have been moments of promise, the emergence of new pitching talents and the potential to reallocate funds towards improving the team’s offense and addressing bullpen weaknesses make parting ways with Germán seem like a reasonable course of action. The Yankees have a wealth of options for the 2024 season, and Germán’s checkered history may tip the scales in favor of his departure.
