The New York Yankees are approaching a critical juncture as the September 1 roster expansion looms, with top prospect Jasson Dominguez in serious contention for a call-up. On Friday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that the outfielder is “in the conversation” for promotion, though he stopped short of confirming whether Dominguez would be among those added to the roster.

Aaron Boone said the Yankees have not decided if Jasson Dominguez will be one of their callups when rosters expand Sunday. “He’s definitely a name in consideration.”

— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) August 30, 2024

According to Bryan Hoch, Jasson Dominguez, who debuted in 2023 and has played just one game this season, will retain his rookie status for 2025 as long as he doesn’t exceed 130 career at-bats (he currently has 35). If ‘the Martian’ maintains his rookie status and wins the 2025 AL Rookie of the Year, the Yankees would receive a draft pick after the first round in 2026.

Yankees weigh Jasson Dominguez promotion amid playoff push

NY POST

Jasson Dominguez, who made a brief appearance with the Yankees earlier this season, has been making his case in Triple-A despite a recent oblique injury that sidelined him for several weeks. In August, Dominguez recorded 87 at-bats, posting a .276 batting average with two home runs, 12 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. His recent surge, including a .380 average over his last 50 at-bats, has bolstered his standing as a potential late-season addition.

The Yankees face a crucial decision as they weigh the benefits of promoting Dominguez against the backdrop of a potential playoff push. With rosters expanding and service time considerations now less of a concern, the team has an opportunity to bring up Dominguez without affecting his future arbitration eligibility.

The prospect of Jasson Dominguez joining the roster casts a spotlight on the struggles of Alex Verdugo, whose offensive output has been underwhelming this season. In a contract year, Verdugo has posted a .234/.294/.361 slash line with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs, while his 84 wRC+ indicates he has been 16% below the league-average hitter. Despite his solid defensive contributions, Verdugo’s offensive decline has raised questions about his role as the Yankees gear up for the postseason. His 0.5 WAR is on pace to be the lowest of his career.

The potential promotion of Jasson Dominguez could signal a strategic shift for the Yankees as they look to bolster their lineup. Dominguez’s switch-hitting ability offers an intriguing alternative to Verdugo, whose future with the team remains uncertain.

Beyond Jasson Dominguez, the Yankees are also anticipating the return of several key players, including Anthony Rizzo, Ian Hamilton, Clarke Schmidt, Jon Berti, and Cody Poteet. These reinforcements could provide the depth needed as the team navigates the final stretch of the regular season and prepares for the postseason.

As the Yankees’ front office deliberates over the coming days, the fate of both Dominguez and Verdugo hangs in the balance. The decisions made now will not only shape the team’s playoff prospects but also signal their approach to the future. The clock is ticking as the Yankees weigh their options, with the stakes higher than ever.
