New York Yankees 5-6 St. Louis Cardinals
The New York Yankees suffered a 6-5 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, with the Cardinals securing their first-ever win at the new Yankee Stadium since it opened in 2009. The loss extended the Yankees’ recent struggles as they fight to maintain their lead in the American League East.

Yankees’ late rally falls short against Cardinals

The Yankees initially took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Cardinals quickly responded. In the third inning, Nolan Arenado tied the game with an RBI single, followed by a three-run homer from Brendan Donovan, giving St. Louis a 4-1 lead.
Despite the setback, the Yankees mounted a late comeback. Giancarlo Stanton delivered a crucial three-run double in the eighth inning, narrowing the gap to 6-5. However, with the tying run in scoring position, Alex Verdugo grounded out, ending the inning.
In the ninth inning, the Yankees had another opportunity to level the score. Juan Soto hit a two-out double, putting the tying run on base. Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley then intentionally walked Aaron Judge, bringing Austin Wells to the plate. After a tense battle, Wells struck out on a 3-2 slider, securing the victory for St. Louis.
The Yankees’ loss highlighted ongoing issues with their pitching rotation. Starter Will Warren struggled again, allowing five runs over three innings. With Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil nearing returns from injury, Warren’s place in the rotation is increasingly uncertain.
Offensively, the Yankees were stifled by Cardinals starter Kyle Gibson, who had struggled in recent outings but managed to keep the Yankees scoreless through seven innings. Despite a late rally, the Yankees couldn’t overcome the deficit. In the ninth, Oswaldo Cabrera was called out on a pitch clock violation, and Gleyber Torres flied out, squandering another chance before Soto and Judge reached base.
