NEW YORK — The New York Yankees’ remarkable ability to revitalize relief pitchers continues with their latest success story. Right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. has transformed from an inconsistent performer to a dependable weapon during his second season in pinstripes.
The 33-year-old veteran has discovered new effectiveness in 2025 after struggling through his initial Yankees tenure. Working closely with pitching coach Matt Blake, Leiter has refined his approach and emerged as a crucial high-leverage option for a bullpen already considered among baseball’s finest.
Difficult start behind him
The Yankees obtained Leiter Jr. from Chicago at the 2024 trade deadline, sending two prospects to the Cubs in a move that generated skepticism. His inconsistency had been well-documented despite flashing occasional brilliance.
His post-trade performance last season validated those concerns. Leiter posted a 4.98 ERA across 21.2 innings while surrendering six home runs despite recording 33 strikeouts. His splitter remained effective, but other offerings left him vulnerable to hard contact, particularly his problematic sinker.
This season tells a completely different story. Leiter has evolved from a roster question mark to a reliable contributor through targeted mechanical and strategic improvements.

Splitter dominance finds supporting cast
Leiter’s devastating splitter remains his signature pitch. Last season, it generated 77% of its strikeouts, and it will continue to produce 66% of its strikeouts in 2025.

The crucial difference lies in his setup pitches.
Blake’s guidance has helped Leiter sharpen his sinker location and overall effectiveness. More significantly, his fastball velocity has increased by approximately 2.5 km/h (1.5 mph) from last season, according to Baseball Savant data. This added velocity prevents hitters from sitting exclusively on breaking balls.
The velocity boost, combined with improved command, has made his splitter even more unhittable when properly sequenced.
Ground ball becoming hallmark
Leiter has dramatically increased his ground ball production — which is essential for limiting damage in crucial situations. His ground ball rate has jumped from 46.2% in 2024 to 54.0% this season, representing a fundamental shift in his effectiveness.
This improvement stems largely from his enhanced sinker usage, which he now locates with much greater precision. Ground balls minimize scoring opportunities, making Leiter perfectly suited for the Yankees‘ late-game run-prevention philosophy.
His arsenal refinement has included strategic simplification. He eliminated his four-seamer and sweeper while adding a slider to better complement his sinker-splitter combination. The streamlined approach has improved his execution consistency.
Command enhancement reduces free passes

Leiter’s most encouraging development has been significantly improved strike zone command. His walk rate has decreased from 8.6% to 6.7%, indicating both increased confidence and better consistency.
Some 2024 struggles resulted from poor fortune — his expected batting average against was a solid .224. This season, performance and luck have aligned favorably. Enhanced command and sharper pitch sequencing have established Leiter as a trusted high-leverage option.
The Yankees’ reputation for career resurrection continues to grow stronger. Luke Weaver and Tim Hill represent recent examples of mediocre relievers becoming valuable contributors under New York’s development system.
The Yankees bullpen currently ranks sixth in major league ERA and fifth in total strikeouts. This success extends beyond established names like Jonathan Loaisiga and Devin Williams. The depth provided by breakthrough performers like Leiter makes this bullpen exceptionally formidable.
The proven formula continues working. Leiter isn’t merely consuming innings — he’s actively helping secure victories.
Future impact potential
Leiter’s transformation could prove vital as the Yankees navigate the season’s most challenging stretch. Injuries and close games will test every aspect of roster depth. Having a reliable, versatile right-handed option like him available could determine the difference between extended postseason success and early October disappointment.
Currently, Leiter is fulfilling the Yankees’ hopes when they acquired him last July — throwing strikes consistently, missing bats regularly, and preventing runs effectively.
He has evolved beyond simple bullpen depth. Mark Leiter Jr. has become a legitimate bullpen weapon.
