New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of adding a new arm to his bullpen, with hints pointing toward free-agent closer Tanner Scott. Though the Yankees have yet to make an official move, Boone’s remarks indicate that Scott is a player the team is monitoring closely in their quest to bolster the bullpen ahead of the 2025 season.

Speaking to reporters, the Yankees manager was candid about his admiration for Scott’s skill set. His comments reflect Scott’s reputation as a hard-throwing left-hander who can thrive in high-pressure situations.

“He’s always had the stuff and flashes of excellence, but obviously some struggles too. I think we’re starting to see a finished product.. of where the stuff and harnessing that have kind of come together,” the Yankees skipper told about the free-agent closer. “I think this year was obviously one of the dominant relievers in the game. I think it’s just with his experience and the dynamic stuff that he has coming together now with that better control has allowed him to ascend.”

Yankees manager Boone remained noncommittal about Luke Weaver‘s role as the team’s closer during the MLB Winter Meetings, leaving the door open for potential bullpen acquisitions and strategic roster adjustments.

Boone explained that the off-season trajectory would influence their decisions, acknowledging that Weaver had demonstrated extraordinary dominance, particularly in the latter half of last season, emerging as one of the most formidable relievers in baseball. He expressed tremendous faith in the pitcher’s capabilities.

But Boone hinted at multiple approaches to bolstering the bullpen, signaling openness to external acquisitions and internal development. He noted that their organization excels at constructing robust relief corps and that they were exploring various avenues, which could include signing free agents or uncovering promising talents within their system who weren’t currently in the spotlight.

His comments suggest the Yankees are keeping their options wide open, potentially preparing for significant bullpen modifications as they strategize for the upcoming season.

Scott, a former closer for the Orioles, the Marlins, and the Padres, posted strong numbers in 2024, finishing the season with 12 saves, a 2.31 ERA, and 104 strikeouts over 74 innings. His ability to miss bats has made him one of the most intriguing bullpen arms on the market, particularly for teams like the Yankees, who are seeking reinforcements to solidify the back end of their bullpen. The Yankees were linked to Scott in July trade deadline too.

Tanner Scott a logical fit for the Yankees

The Yankees’ bullpen faced moments of inconsistency during the 2024 season, with injuries and uneven performances exposing a need for reliable late-inning options. Adding a pitcher like Scott could provide the Yankees with a versatile weapon that can handle both closing duties and high-leverage situations.

What makes Scott particularly appealing is his left-handed delivery, which offers balance in a bullpen currently dominated by right-handed arms. Yankee Stadium’s dimensions, especially the short porch in right field, make effective left-handed relievers a valuable commodity for the team.

Scott’s track record enticing Yankees

Tanner Scott’s career has been marked by steady improvement. Initially drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, Scott struggled with control early in his career but eventually honed his command and became a key piece of the Marlins’ bullpen after joining the team in 2022. Over the past two seasons, Scott has emerged as one of the league’s top strikeout pitchers, boasting a strikeout rate of 13.5 per nine innings.

His power fastball-slider combination has been especially effective against left-handed hitters, who managed just a .181 batting average against him in 2024. However, Scott’s versatility also allows him to handle right-handed batters effectively, making him a dependable option regardless of the matchup.

While Scott’s talent is undeniable, there are challenges to bringing him to the Bronx. For one, Scott is expected to command a significant contract, with multiple teams reportedly expressing interest in his services. The Yankees will need to weigh the financial implications of adding Scott against their other offseason priorities, including potential upgrades to their rotation and outfield depth.

Additionally, Boone emphasized the importance of finding the right fit for the team’s culture and strategy. “We’re always looking for ways to improve, but it’s about finding the right piece to complement what we already have,” Boone said, suggesting that any move involving Scott would need to align with the Yankees’ broader plans.

While Boone’s comments stopped short of confirming any imminent moves, they underscore the Yankees’ intent to explore all options in fortifying their bullpen. Whether or not Tanner Scott becomes part of the Yankees’ plans remains to be seen, but the interest signals a proactive approach to addressing key needs.

For Scott, the opportunity to join a storied franchise like the Yankees would be a significant career milestone. His ability to handle the pressure of pitching in New York would undoubtedly be tested, but his track record suggests he has the tools to succeed in the spotlight.

The Yankees’ potential pursuit of Tanner Scott reflects their commitment to building a championship-caliber roster. With Aaron Boone expressing admiration for the free agent closer’s abilities, Scott emerges as a compelling option to strengthen the Yankees’ bullpen. While no deal has been finalized, the possibility of Scott donning pinstripes adds an intriguing layer to the team’s offseason narrative.

As the Yankees continue to explore their options, fans can expect further developments in the coming weeks. Whether or not Scott ultimately joins the Bronx Bombers, Boone’s comments highlight the team’s determination to address their weaknesses and contend for a title in 2025.
