NEW YORK — Kyle Tucker’s future has become one of baseball’s biggest talking points after his recent comments about free agency. Following the Chicago Cubs’ playoff exit, the All-Star outfielder’s cautious remarks about his next move quickly turned into a heated debate among New York Yankees fans. Many in the Bronx are not pleased with the idea of Tucker joining the Yankees, and they have made their opinions known loudly.
Tucker hints at free agency after Cubs’ playoff loss
After the Cubs were eliminated by the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series, Tucker was asked about his plans for next season. The 28-year-old kept his answer brief, avoiding any firm commitment about where he might play in 2026.
“We’ll see what happens,” Tucker told reporters. “I don’t know what the future is going to hold.”
He added, “If not, it was an honor playing with all these guys and I wish everyone the best of luck, whether it’s playing next year or not with them.”
Tucker ended the 2025 regular season batting .266 with 22 home runs, 73 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases in 136 games. His performance was solid but not his career best, as injuries slowed him down. He fractured his right hand in May and later suffered a calf strain, missing key games during Chicago’s postseason run. Those setbacks affected his rhythm at the plate during the playoffs, where he went just 3-for-17.
Yankees linked as possible suitor

As soon as Tucker’s comments surfaced, speculation began about which teams could pursue him in free agency. Among the rumored suitors were the New York Yankees, who face outfield uncertainty with Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham also entering the market.
Tucker’s left-handed power and ability to play multiple outfield positions have made him an attractive option for teams seeking a middle-of-the-order bat. Several analysts have said the Yankees could consider him as a potential replacement if Bellinger departs.
Many claim Tucker might provide more consistency than Bellinger, particularly given his strong on-base skills and steady production in recent seasons. However, while the Yankees front office might see a fit, many fans clearly don’t agree.
Yankees fans push back hard on idea
The reaction among Yankees fans has been overwhelmingly negative. On social media, posts expressing disapproval quickly trended among the fan community. Some comments were short and direct, including “F* no”** and “We’ll keep Bellinger.” Others questioned whether Tucker’s playing style or contract demands align with the team’s needs.
Fans have pointed out that Tucker’s natural position is right field, which belongs to Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ captain. That positional overlap, combined with Tucker’s expected market price, has sparked frustration among the fan base. Many believe pursuing Tucker would force unnecessary roster changes and limit financial flexibility.
Some fans also argued that Bellinger’s defensive value in center field and his chemistry with teammates make him a better long-term fit. “Bellinger earned his pinstripes,” one fan wrote on X. “We don’t need Tucker.”
The outcry reflects a rare divide between analysts and the fan base. While baseball experts highlight Tucker’s advanced metrics and potential fit at Yankee Stadium, fans appear more concerned about maintaining stability and avoiding another massive contract that may backfire.
A costly decision for any team
Tucker is expected to be among the most expensive free agents this winter. According to Spotrac, his projected value is around $38 million per year, which could result in a deal worth close to $400 million over a decade. That kind of contract would test the Yankees’ financial limits, especially with several long-term commitments already in place.
Yankees insider Jon Heyman described Tucker’s return to the Cubs as “a long shot.” Chicago acquired him from the Houston Astros last December in a blockbuster trade that sent Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski, and prospect Cam Smith to Houston. The Cubs had hoped Tucker would help push them deeper into the postseason, but that plan fell short when the team was eliminated early.
Now, with the Cubs looking to reset their payroll and focus on younger players, Tucker is almost certain to explore free agency. Teams like the Dodgers, Mets, and Giants are expected to make competitive offers. Whether the Yankees join that group will depend on how general manager Brian Cashman evaluates the balance between star power and roster depth.
Yankee priorities complicate the pursuit

Even if the Yankees have interest in Tucker, the fit is complicated. The team already has Judge in right field, Bellinger capable of handling center or first base, and young talent Jasson Domínguez expected to return from injury in 2026. Adding another high-profile outfielder would crowd the roster and potentially disrupt lineup balance.
Financially, the Yankees are already projected to sit near the top of the league in payroll. Team owner Hal Steinbrenner has said he wants the club to remain competitive but responsible with spending, a stance that may limit room for another massive deal.
Reports have also noted that while Tucker’s left-handed swing fits the dimensions of Yankee Stadium, the Yankees might view him as a luxury rather than a need. His addition would not address their biggest concerns, which include pitching depth and infield consistency.
Fans remain loyal to Bellinger
Bellinger’s performance and personality have earned him significant support in New York. In his first full season with the Yankees, he hit .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs, while also playing standout defense in center field. His leadership in the clubhouse and connection with Judge have only strengthened his case for a long-term deal.
That loyalty explains much of the backlash to Tucker’s rumored connection. “Bellinger fits the Yankees,” one fan posted. “Tucker doesn’t.”
The Yankees’ leadership often pays attention to fan sentiment, especially when it aligns with baseball logic. Given the team’s history with big-money signings that didn’t work out, there is little appetite for another high-risk contract unless it directly improves the lineup balance.
For now, Tucker appears ready to explore his options in free agency. His brief remarks suggest he expects strong interest from several clubs. When healthy, Tucker remains one of the league’s most complete players, combining power, speed, and elite defense.
Still, the idea of seeing him in Yankees pinstripes has not gone over well with New York fans. While front-office executives weigh their options, supporters have already delivered their verdict — and it’s a loud no.
