Aaron Judge’s astute defense and consistent bat played a key role in the Yankees’ win over the Rays, supporting Ben Rice’s offense and bullpen.
Aaron Judge proved Thursday evening that his contribution to the New York Yankees extends well beyond crushing home runs. During a compelling 6-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees’ leader delivered a complete performance that highlighted his impact across all facets of the game.
Judge kicked things off with a run-scoring single in the first inning, staking New York to an early advantage. But mere moments later, he exhibited his defensive excellence by gunning down Kameron Misner attempting to reach third base with a pinpoint throw from right field, extinguishing what could have been a dangerous opening-inning threat from the Rays.

“Wow, what a throw,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “I’m sure they told Misner before the game [about Judge’s arm], but he got to live it. That’s about as good as you’ll see right there.”
The defensive gem not only eliminated a scoring chance for Tampa Bay but also enabled rookie pitcher Will Warren to find his rhythm after an unsteady beginning. Warren went on to complete five frames, with the Yankees’ relievers handling the remainder effectively.
Judge’s matches personal best streak
Judge ended the contest going 1-for-4 with a base on balls, extending to 10 his streak of consecutive games reaching base multiple times. This equals his career high and continues what has been a blistering start to the 2025 campaign for the two-time Most Valuable Player.
Rays manager Kevin Cash acknowledged the difficulty of confronting Judge, observing before the game that the Yankees’ star consistently finds ways to make an impact.

“He’s maybe the game’s best power hitter and you could make the argument he’s the best pure hitter,” Cash said. “We’ve seen him for many, many years now and it never gets easier.”
Despite several situations during the matchup, the Rays chose not to intentionally walk Judge, a tactic that wasn’t employed even during his MVP seasons of 2022 and 2024. During those two years, Judge received 39 intentional walks, but none came courtesy Tampa Bay.
Brings power and equilibrium to Yankees lineup

With Judge solidifying the heart of the order, the Yankees are demonstrating a more balanced offensive approach this season. Manager Aaron Boone noted that the current batting arrangement provides the team additional options to capitalize even when opponents pitch cautiously to their captain.
If Judge receives careful treatment in crucial situations, the responsibility shifts to his supporting cast—including Jazz Chisholm Jr., Cody Bellinger, and Austin Wells—to deliver clutch hits. That scenario didn’t materialize Thursday, as Judge maintained his knack for finding pitches to drive even in challenging counts.
Superior defense often underappreciated
While Judge’s offensive statistics frequently dominate discussions, his defensive metrics are equally outstanding. His throw to catch Misner registered at 94 mph and reached third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera without bouncing, halting a potential rally instantly.
According to Statcast, Judge ranks among the top five outfielders in throwing velocity and defensive runs saved since 2022. Though his towering home runs typically capture highlight attention, his game-altering defense has become equally reliable.
Boone: ‘We’re witnessing an all-time great’

Boone was generous with praise following the victory, suggesting that Judge’s comprehensive skillset places him in rarefied company among contemporary players.
“He’s the total package,” Boone said. “He’s becoming an all-time great player. That’s what we’re in the middle of witnessing.”
Judge’s sustained excellence is fueling the Yankees‘ ascent in the standings, and his leadership, both vocal and demonstrative, is helping unify a clubhouse that believes this season could culminate in an extended playoff journey.
The Yankees (now 12-7) will continue their series against the Rays (8-11) throughout the weekend, aiming to build upon their momentum. With Judge spearheading the offense and defense, and a roster beginning to hit its stride, the Bronx Bombers appear positioned to maintain their grip atop the AL East for the foreseeable future.
And if the captain maintains this level of play, opposing teams may have no alternative but to finally reconsider the strategy of granting him free passes—or continue suffering the consequences.
