Yankees stars Judge and Rodon show support for Red Sox OF Duran while Bellinger calls for Guardians fan ban.
Even the most intense sporting rivalries can dissolve when basic human dignity is at stake — a truth powerfully demonstrated this week as New York Yankees standouts Aaron Judge, Carlos Rodon, and Cody Bellinger publicly rallied behind Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran following a disturbing fan interaction in Cleveland.
During Sunday’s contest at Progressive Field, reports indicate a Guardians spectator hurled verbal abuse specifically targeting Duran’s previous mental health challenges, including a suicide attempt that the outfielder had courageously disclosed in the Netflix series “The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox.” Stadium personnel promptly removed the individual, and Major League Baseball has launched an investigation. The reverberations from this incident, however, have extended well beyond northeast Ohio.
Judge takes the lead in support

Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ respected captain and one of baseball’s most prominent voices, responded without hesitation when asked about his support for Duran.
“Definitely,” Judge told NJ Advance Media’s Randy Miller. “Getting to know him [Duran] a little bit, he’s a great kid. He’s got a bright future ahead of him. What a tremendous athlete.”
Judge, who shared the field with Duran as American League teammates during the 2024 All-Star Game, further reflected, “We all go through our struggles in life, our ups and downs. For Jarren to prevail and still be doing what he loves to do, I definitely feel for what he’s gone through and what he had to go through on Sunday.”
“You can boo and you can say whatever you want about performance,” Judge emphasized, “but what happened in Cleveland is taking it too far.”
Bellinger calls for lifetime ban on fans
Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger, who has weathered considerable criticism throughout recent seasons, advocated for more severe consequences.
In conversation with Miller, Bellinger stated that the responsible fan should receive a permanent ban from Progressive Field.
Heckling Jarren Duran about his suicide attempt is exactly why men stay silent.

“MLB players are all human beings with emotions and feelings,” Bellinger said. “It was hard to hear what that fan said to Duran.”
His sentiments align with growing demands throughout baseball for more stringent accountability regarding spectator behavior.
Rodon speaks from experience

Carlos Rodon, the Yankees’ left-handed starter, provided perhaps the most personal perspective. He understands the weight of relentless fan criticism — particularly during his challenging 2023 season when his performance fell short of expectations after signing a six-year, $162 million agreement with New York.
“Dealing with hate is part of the major league life,” Rodón said. “It sucks, but it comes with our territory.”
Nevertheless, he distinguished between routine jeering and Duran’s experience.
“I know how it feels to be the target of fans. I felt like I was falling into a hole deeper and deeper and wishing somebody would throw me a rope,” Rodón revealed. “But that’s a whole different thing, what Duran went through in his life and then came up on Sunday.”
Rodón characterized the harassment as “super unacceptable,” joining the widespread support for Duran emanating from the Yankees’ clubhouse.
A league-wide problem

The Cleveland incident represents the latest in a concerning pattern of fan conduct making headlines across MLB. Just last postseason, a Yankees supporter received a lifetime ban after attempting to interfere with Mookie Betts’ glove during a World Series matchup. In another recent episode, a spectator reached beyond the outfield barrier to hinder Mets outfielder Tommy Pham.
While players understand that boos and criticism come with professional athletics, personal attacks — particularly regarding sensitive matters like mental health — have no place in sporting venues. This message continues to gain urgency with each incident.
Duran, at 27, has emerged as a symbol of resilience within baseball circles. His openness regarding his battles with depression and mental health has garnered widespread admiration. In the aftermath of Sunday’s occurrence, fans, fellow players, and mental health advocates have flooded social platforms with messages of solidarity.
Yankees, Red Sox set rivalry aside
What stands out most prominently is the groundswell of support originating from within the Yankees organization. For a franchise defined by its historic rivalry with Boston, the statements from Judge, Rodón, and Bellinger serve as a reminder that baseball fundamentally represents a community beyond competition.
This demonstration of solidarity — from three of New York’s most recognizable figures — arrives as the sport increasingly addresses mental health concerns and player welfare in substantive ways. The MLB Players Association has advocated for enhanced support systems league-wide, and Duran’s experience may further catalyze meaningful change.
MLB response expected
According to ESPN reporting, Major League Baseball officials and the Guardians organization continue investigating the incident. While specific disciplinary actions remain undetermined, precedent suggests a permanent exclusion from Progressive Field represents a likely outcome.
Players, supporters, and organizations alike are calling for decisive measures.
For the Yankees, this situation has prompted both introspection and a public affirmation of basic decency. Their message resonates clearly: while the competitive rivalry with Boston endures, respect for human dignity transcends any scoreboard or standings.
