New York Yankees 2 – Boston Red Sox 3
On Friday night, the AL East’s last-place Boston Red Sox defeated Aaron Judge and the first-place New York Yankees, 3-2, thanks to three hits from J.D. Martinez, including the game-tying RBI single that scored Martinez in the ninth inning.
Before the closer came in, New York’s pitchers had retired 12 straight batters from Boston. In the ninth inning, with two on and one out, Clay Holmes walked both of them and then allowed Martinez to reach on an infield single.
Judge, who had already reached base for the fourth time thanks to his third-inning home run (his 46th overall) and a walk to start the 10th inning, did so again. But the danger was neutralized when Garrett Whitlock struck out Josh Donaldson and Gleyber Torres.

Christian Arroyo, who advances automatically to third on groundouts, stayed at third on a bunt single by pinch hitter Reese McGuire in the bottom of the inning. Pham, acquired at the last minute, punched the winning punch down the third-base line.
In two innings of work, Whitlock (3-2) had three strikeouts and one walk.
The Yankees have lost three in a row and eight of nine overall, but they still lead their division by 10 games thanks to the stellar play of Lou Trivino (1-7), who allowed two hits and one out.

In the third inning, Judge drove in 100 runs by smacking the first pitch 429 feet, well beyond the Monster Seats and onto Lansdowne Street. He is currently on pace to hit 66 home runs this season. For the fifth consecutive game, he had at least three base hits, as he walked twice and was hit by a pitch.
A two-hit by Jose Trevino and an RBI double by Anthony Rizzo in the first inning plated Judge.
