John Sterling says no to retirement, to be back next season

John Sterling, the radio voice of the Yankees, is not retiring. Fans can listen to him at the New York Yankees’ radio booth next season.
Sunday, the play-by-play announcer told Newsday that he plans to come back to WFAN for the 2023 season. John Sterling said:
“Of course, I don’t know how many games I’ll do. Maybe I’ll do all of them. Every broadcaster takes games off. It’s not a big thing. Vin Scully started it. But I plan to continue working and I have, right now, no desire to stop. I’m going to work.”
This year, John Sterling, who is 84 years old, started cutting back on how much he worked. He decided to miss a few Yankees away games during the season after the All-Star break. But as Aaron Judge tried to create a new American League home run record, that plan fell apart.
Andrew Marchand of The New York Post said a year ago at this time that John Sterling would be limiting his radio announcement in 2022. But in January, the play-by-play radio announcer told NJ Advance Media that he didn’t want to work less during the 2022 season.
Starting in 1989, Sterling was the radio voice of the Yankees for 5,060 games without a break. He took his first break in July 2019 and it was only for four games.
Sterling’s offseason started on Sunday when the Yankees lost to the Houston Astros 6–5 in Game 4 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium.
