Los aficionados de los Yankees disfrutaron de un espectáculo conmovedor el viernes en el Steinbrenner Field, cuando Joe Torre, el apreciado ex entrenador del equipo, vistió un uniforme a rayas por primera vez desde su marcha en 2007.

La visita sorpresa se produjo después de que Aaron Boone, que actualmente ejerce como asistente especial del comisionado además de sus funciones de manager, se pusiera en contacto con Joe Torre, de 83 años, mientras éste visitaba el campamento de los Dodgers de Los Ángeles en Arizona.

Al principio, Joe Torre se sobresaltó un poco cuando vio que el nombre de Boone aparecía en su teléfono, preocupado por la posibilidad de que hubiera habido un malentendido. Sin embargo, Boone se apresuró a disipar esos temores invitando a Torre a unirse al equipo de los Yankees e incluso a ponerse el uniforme. Aunque en un principio Torre se mostró reticente a vestir el uniforme, finalmente aceptó la invitación de Boone.

La nostalgia llenó el aire del Steinbrenner Field el viernes cuando Joe Torre, enfundado en la emblemática camiseta de los Yankees con el número 6 y a rayas diplomáticas, se reunió con el equipo en el banquillo. Su presencia detrás de la jaula de bateo, mezclado con el entrenador Aaron Boone, aportó una energía palpable al ambiente.

Boone, visiblemente eufórico por tener de vuelta a Joe Torre, destacó la importancia de su regreso. Destacó la amplia experiencia del veterano técnico y su inmenso valor para el equipo en este inicio de temporada, especialmente antes de su derrota por 6-2 en la exhibición ante los Pittsburgh Pirates.

Boone expresó además la importancia de que Joe Torre interactúe con los jugadores actuales. Consideró un privilegio contar con la presencia de varios yanquis legendarios durante los entrenamientos de primavera, pero destacó a Torre como el más apreciado entre ellos. Boone concluyó transmitiendo su profunda gratitud por la visita de Torre, que amplió a unos días, y expresó su esperanza de que todos aprendieran de la presencia del legendario manager.

El reencuentro no se limitó sólo a Torre y los aficionados. Andy Pettitte, un ex lanzador estrella que jugó bajo el liderazgo de Torre, también estuvo presente en el campamento, junto con Ron Guidry y Willie Randolph, ambos de los cuales sirvieron como entrenadores durante las carreras de campeonato de Torre con los Yankees. Curiosamente, el propio Boone jugó bajo la dirección de Torre en 2003.

Está claro que a Torre le encantó la oportunidad de reencontrarse con su antiguo equipo. Describió la experiencia como un delicioso viaje al pasado, lleno de reencuentros con sus antiguos colegas, incluidos entrenadores y preparadores físicos. Mencionó su intención de quedarse unos días, haciendo hincapié en su deseo de no interferir en las responsabilidades de Boone.
