Jazz Chisholm Jr. is facing a likely stint on the injured list after suffering a UCL injury, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Speaking to reporters in Chicago, Boone expressed uncertainty about the severity of the injury but acknowledged the setback could be significant for both Chisholm and the team.
This injury is a blow to the Yankees, who acquired Jazz Chisholm at the MLB trade deadline to add left-handed power to their lineup. Despite having never played third base in his MLB career with the Miami Marlins, Chisholm adapted quickly to the position in New York, batting .316/.361/.702 with a 1.062 OPS, seven homers, 11 RBI, and 13 runs scored in 14 games.
What is going to happen?
According to FOX, it’s uncertain whether Jazz Chisholm will need surgery to repair the injury, but UCL injuries are among the most dreaded in baseball, as the ligament is essential for proper throwing. Although the injury affects Chisholm’s non-throwing elbow, it could still impair his swing from the left side.
Jazz Chisholm left Monday night’s game against the White Sox after scoring on an infield hit by Anthony Volpe in the fifth inning. He was stealing third base when Volpe’s slow grounder rolled between the third baseman and shortstop, prompting Chisholm to dash home. Though he scored, a head-first slide led to his left arm getting caught in the catcher’s cleat, potentially causing the injury. Chisholm exited the game an inning later with what was described as a left elbow injury.
“My adrenaline was still going, so I didn’t feel it right away,” Chisholm said, after fans and the YES Network noticed him trying to rotate his arm after the play. “An inning went by, just sitting there, and I started to feel it a little bit.”
The Yankees, who had been struggling before Jazz Chisholm’s arrival, now face the challenge of filling the gap at third base. Boone may turn to players like DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera, and possibly Gleyber Torres to step up. Cabrera is set to start at third base on Tuesday night as the Yankees continue their series against the White Sox.
Jazz Chisholm’s potential absence would be a tough blow, as he has provided the Yankees with a potent mix of power, speed, athleticism, and versatility. Boone’s comments suggest the team is preparing for life without one of its key contributors, at least in the short term.
