The New York Yankees are likely to trade Luis Severino, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. As the team is at its lowest position in three decades, the team is planning to recast the team.

As the MLB season approaches the trade deadline, there’s a lot of uncertainty for the Yankees. While they may try to acquire new players, some experienced veterans might end up being traded before August 1. Starting pitcher Luis Severino is one player who has come up in trade rumors.

Luis Severino on the chopping block

The New York Yankees find themselves in a fascinating situation. At the start of the 2023 season, they were considered contenders for the World Series title. However, injuries have significantly impacted their performance. They’ve faced various injuries, especially to their starting pitchers and outfielder Aaron Judge. As a result, the team’s record is currently 50-47, placing them in the last position in the American League East, a first in three decades.

Rosenthal mentioned that despite the Yankees’ disappointing performance and their proximity to reaching the highest threshold, an all-in approach seems unlikely. Instead, the team might consider buying and selling, looking into deals to enhance the roster but possibly at a lower cost.

Rosenthal also added that the Yankees have potential free agents on their roster, such as righty Luis Severino (with approximately $5 million owed at the deadline), infielder-outfielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa ($2 million), outfielder Harrison Bader ($1.7 million), and lefty reliever Wandy Peralta ($1.2 million). It is possible that some of these players could be traded, while others might be added to the team.

Luis Severino looks puzzled and disturned as he gave up six runs in the Yankees’ 7-6 win over the Mets at Citi Field.

Luis Severino hasn’t had the best season so far, with a 6.66 ERA in 10 starts, but there’s hope that he can improve. He had a late start to the 2023 season due to injury and has shown some positive signs recently, allowing one run or less in two of his last four starts.

The player who has been selected as an All-Star twice has faced different injuries since 2019. However, when Luis Severino is in good health, he has the ability to be a key pitcher at the top of the team’s rotation. It’s uncertain what decisions the New York team will make, but if you’re a Yankees fan, it’s important to closely follow Luis Severino’s progress and performance.

Potential Yankees-Cardinals deal

According to reports, the New York Yankees are considering making a big move involving the Cardinals.

As of now, the New York Yankees find themselves in the last place in the American League East with a disappointing 50-47 record. However, the team has the potential to bounce back. Initially considered favorites for the title in the 2023 season, the Yankees have faced challenges recently. But if they can get key players healthy and make strategic moves, they still have a chance to make an impact in the postseason.

According to Jim Bowden from The Athletic, the Yankees have a goal for the trade deadline, which is to acquire a starting pitcher and a two-way left fielder. He mentioned that a potential deal with the Cardinals could help them fulfill both needs. Bowden noted that Jack Flaherty, who has faced some injuries early in his career, has been performing well this season, making 18 starts and holding a 7-5 record with a 4.29 ERA. In his last three starts, he only allowed three earned runs in 18 2/3 innings. Flaherty is set to become a free agent, and he appears to have the right attitude to handle the pressures of pitching for the Yankees in New York.

Bowden also stated that it has been observed that Dylan Carlson from the Cardinals has not met expectations, leading to the assumption that the team may be willing to part ways with him. Despite being 24 years old and not yet reaching his prime years, Carlson is under team control until 2026. He currently boasts a.344 on-base percentage and is considered at least an average major-league player both offensively and defensively, with potential for future improvement. This potential trade could potentially be an upgrade for the Yankees.

The New York Yankees are looking to improve their team in both the starting rotation and outfield positions. The St. Louis Cardinals could potentially be of great help in addressing these needs. Jack Flaherty, who is set to become a free agent after this season, and Dylan Carlson, who might not have a starting position in the Cardinals’ lineup due to outfield competition, could be valuable additions to the Yankees. Bringing in Flaherty and Carlson could give the Yankees an immediate boost and improve their chances of securing a Wild Card spot.

The Yankees are currently close to a Wild Card spot, just three-and-a-half games away. This means there’s still a chance for them to make it to the playoffs.

Flaherty, in his last three starts, has only allowed 3 earned runs in 18 2/3 innings.
Do the Yankees really need another 6 inning pitcher? Our bullpen is worn out past the point of being effective.
I suppose another starting pitcher is always welcome, but who’s going to mop up after his 6 innings? We’re right back to square one.
Perhaps sending Severino to the bullpen would work to better advantage?
I don’t get paid to make these decisions, and that’s undoubtedly a good thing, although I’m unsure if I could do worse than Cashman and Boone at this point.

Why bullpen, he gets bombed in his first 2 innings of pitching but we certainly don’t need Flaherty, guaranteed to go on DL after 1 start
