There’s a lot happening in the baseball world as the Yankees, Juan Soto, and—like it or not—the Red Sox dominate offseason headlines. For Yankees fans, the idea of Soto joining Boston has become a joke, especially during Thanksgiving when many took to social media to mock Red Sox believers who were certain Soto would end up wearing Boston’s jersey.
Fueling these rumors, journalist Marino Pepen reported that Rafael Devers, Boston’s star player, reached out to Soto in a bid to convince him to join the Red Sox. According to Pepen, the conversation may have occurred during Black Friday—a day synonymous with striking deals, though this is one Yankees fans hope doesn’t come to fruition.
To further complicate matters, Juan Soto‘s official partner, Celsius, announced a new partnership. Juan Soto, who had previously joked about his future with the Yankees, commented on rumors linking him to the Boston Red Sox, intensifying uncertainty among fans and teams alike.
A new chapter in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry?
The possibility of Soto signing with Boston has sparked frustration among Yankees fans, who are already wary of Boston’s efforts to disrupt their plans. A move like this would not only intensify the historic rivalry but also give Red Sox fans a rare reason to cheer in an otherwise speculative offseason.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic offered insight into the Yankees’ approach, emphasizing their patience in pursuing Soto. “Only Soto and his agency, the Boras Corporation, can determine when they have the best offers on the table. Only Soto can decide where he wants to spend the rest of his career,” Bowden explained.
The Yankees are determined to land the 26-year-old superstar, whose stellar 2024 stats—35 home runs, 109 RBIs, and a league-best .432 on-base percentage—cement his place as the crown jewel of free agency. However, they face stiff competition from the Mets, Dodgers, and other dark-horse contenders like the Blue Jays.
Contingency plans for the Yankees
While Juan Soto remains their top priority, the Yankees are prepared to pivot if needed. Alternatives include outfielders Anthony Santander, Willy Adames, or Christian Walker. On the pitching side, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried have emerged as potential targets to bolster their roster.
The Yankees know they must balance big moves with financial flexibility as they aim to rebound from a disappointing 2024 campaign. Stabilizing positions like first base will also be critical as they prepare for the season ahead.
As the Thanksgiving leftovers disappear, the focus shifts to Juan Soto’s next move. Will he remain in the Bronx, or will Rafael Devers’ rumored pitch lure him to Boston? For Yankees fans, the hope is that Soto chooses to stay in pinstripes, keeping the rivalry tilted firmly in their favor—on and off the field.
