Insider predicts Yankees may show LeMahieu the door via DFA

DJ LeMahieu, usually a dependable hitter for the New York Yankees, has encountered significant difficulties in the 2024 season. His year started off with a setback when a minor fracture in his right foot placed him on the injured list. Upon his return, LeMahieu has struggled to regain his form at the plate.

Over 42 games, his batting average has dropped to just .179, with an on-base percentage of .275 and a slugging percentage of .224. The veteran has only hit one home run and driven in 12 runs, well below his typical performance. This slump has become a concern for the Yankees, who are aiming for a competitive season.

Baseball insider Jon Heyman mentioned on Ryan Sampson’s “Around the Bases” podcast that if LeMahieu’s struggles continue, the team might consider designating him for assignment.

“At some point, I think [DJ] LeMahieu is going to be a DFA candidate. They are certainly trying to avoid that, giving him chances and hes’s solid defensively, but, I mean, you can’t have a guy nohitting at all.”

"They'd (Yankees) love to get Jonathan India but the Reds are reluctant to trade him"

While he has been solid defensively at third base, that alone isn’t enough to secure his spot in the starting lineup. LeMahieu needs to start hitting the ball—and soon. However, he isn’t the only one facing this pressure. Heyman said:

“Verdugo is not hitting, and certainly they are going to give him some rope, but you might have to look at replacing left field too.”

Heyman also noted that Alex Verdugo is currently in a slump as well. Over his last five games, the slugger is hitting just 2-for-16, a concerning dip considering his strong start to the season.

DJ LeMahieu’s playing time could be cut if the Yankees stay focused ahead of the trade deadline

As the trade deadline approaches, the New York Yankees are reportedly exploring options to strengthen their third base position, which could significantly reduce DJ LeMahieu’s role in the lineup. The team’s search for infield reinforcements has led to speculation about potential acquisitions.

One name linked to the Yankees is Paul DeJong of the Chicago White Sox. Known for his defensive versatility, DeJong has experience across multiple infield positions, including third base, shortstop, and second base. This flexibility could be valuable for the Yankees’ roster construction.

Another intriguing possibility that has gained traction recently is Yandy Diaz from the Tampa Bay Rays. Reports suggest the Rays are open to entertaining offers for the talented infielder. Diaz’s performance this season has been impressive, with a .273 batting average, a .329 on-base percentage, and a .396 slugging percentage through 94 games. He’s also contributed eight home runs and 46 RBIs.

While Diaz would undoubtedly upgrade the Yankees’ lineup, his availability is likely to attract interest from multiple teams. To secure his services, the Yankees would need to present a compelling offer to the Rays.
