As the New York Yankees continue to shape their roster for the upcoming season, speculation swirls around the return of former utility player Gio Urshela. Despite numerous offseason moves, the Yankees remain open to further additions, with Urshela emerging as a familiar name in discussions. However, according to Bryan Hoch, this move is unlikely to happen.

It’s up in the air where Gio Urshela end up, but New York has thrown its hat in the ring. However, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch poured cold water on the notion of a reunion.

“Heard (New York Mets) and NYY have both shown interest, but Angels and (Miami Marlins) have made better offers at this time,” Hoch said.

What’s happening with Gio Urshela?

Having spent the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angels, Urshela’s tenure was marred by injuries, limiting his appearances to just 62 games. While his future remains uncertain, reports suggest that both the New York Mets and the Yankees have expressed interest in his services. However, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, other teams like the Angels and the Miami Marlins have presented more enticing offers, casting doubt on a potential reunion in New York.

Urshela’s history with the Yankees paints a compelling picture. During his time in New York from 2019 to 2021, he showcased remarkable performance, tallying 41 home runs, 153 RBIs, and a solid slash line of .292/.335/.480 across 291 games. Although traded to the Minnesota Twins before the 2022 season, Urshela continued to shine, and his brief stint with the Angels in 2023 demonstrated flashes of his potential, despite grappling with injuries.

Why should the Yankees consider trading Gio Urshela?

For the Yankees, the prospect of reacquiring Urshela holds promise. His versatility across the diamond, coupled with his offensive prowess, could bolster the team’s lineup and defensive capabilities. However, the current landscape suggests a reunion may be unlikely, given the allure of competing offers from other franchises.

While Urshela’s return to the Bronx remains uncertain, the potential benefits of his signing cannot be overlooked. His familiarity with the organization and proven track record make him a viable candidate to reinforce the Yankees’ roster. As discussions unfold, the Yankees weigh their options amidst competing interests, leaving the possibility of a reunion with Urshela hanging in the balance.
