The Yankees’ controversial facial hair policy change took center stage this weekend, with reports claiming new closer Devin Williams played a direct role in its reversal. Despite Hal Steinbrenner’s promises of changes within the Yankees organization, this decision has sparked controversy, with players like Aaron Judge denying that they backed the move.
Yankees’ closer shuts down reports of beard policy influence

However, Williams himself shut down those claims on Saturday, stating he never specifically requested a meeting with owner Hal Steinbrenner.
“I didn’t ask for a meeting,” Williams told reporters. “I had conversations with Hal and Brian [Cashman] about a lot of things, and obviously, the policy came up. But I didn’t go in there demanding a change.”
Williams’ statement contradicts reports suggesting he pressured the Yankees‘ front office into lifting their decades-old rule. The 29-year-old right-hander, acquired from the Brewers this offseason, had expressed discontent over having to shave, but the organization had already been considering the change for years.
Steinbrenner admitted that the policy had become outdated and that discussions with Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, and Giancarlo Stanton played a significant role in the decision. The Yankees officially announced on Friday that players could now have well-groomed beards, a move welcomed by many in the clubhouse.
Yankees struggle in second spring training game
While the off-field drama captured headlines, the Yankees’ performance on the field raised early concerns. In their first road game of spring, New York fell 6-4 to the Blue Jays, with Carlos Rodón struggling in his debut outing.
Rodón allowed three runs on five hits over 2.2 innings, showing inconsistency with his fastball command. While it’s just the first start of spring, Rodón’s struggles mirror the control issues that plagued his disappointing 2024 campaign.
“It’s about working on things right now, but obviously, I want to be sharper,” Rodón said postgame.
The Yankees’ offense saw promising moments from their younger players. Alexander Vargas delivered a game-tying homer in the eighth inning, while Spencer Jones successfully challenged a called third strike before making solid contact in his next at-bat. Oswaldo Cabrera also made a highlight-reel defensive play at third base, furthering his case for an Opening Day roster spot.
Despite the flashes of talent, the Yankees’ bullpen surrendered two late runs, sealing the loss. With their new era officially underway, the team must now shift focus to improving their on-field performance. As they return to Tampa to face the Detroit Tigers on Sunday at 1:05 PM ET at George M. Steinbrenner Field, they’ll look for stronger outings from their veteran arms and continue evaluating key position battles.
