Juan Soto’s free agency has become the central storyline of the offseason, with teams across the league vying for the services of the 26-year-old slugger.

While Juan Soto’s representatives have started introductory meetings with interested clubs, the process remains in its early stages. According to MassLive.com, the Red Sox hosted Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, for a three-hour meeting, which Boston described as “productive” but non-committal.

No financial terms were discussed as the Red Sox focused on introducing their organizational vision and player development methods, while Soto gathered information about their commitment to winning.

Yankees positioned to dominate bidding war for Juan Soto

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 25: Juan Soto #22 of the New York Yankees tosses his bat after drawing a walk in the first inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers during Game One of the 2024 World Series at Dodger Stadium on October 25, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

The Yankees, however, remain firmly in the spotlight as the team most likely to retain Juan Soto. After acquiring him in a blockbuster trade last season, Soto rewarded the Yankees with a career-high 41 home runs, 109 RBIs, and a .288 batting average, ultimately helping to end the team’s 15-year World Series drought.

According to The New York Post, Juan Soto was said to be “impressed” by the “productive” meeting, though it remains early in the process with the Mets, Yankees, and Blue Jays expected to be in hot pursuit.

Be that as it may, Brian Hoch noted that although the Yankees might not deliver a better offer than their rivals, they must remain competitive. It’s no secret that the Yankees will push as far as possible to ensure Soto stays in the Bronx. While Soto’s market includes other heavy hitters, the Yankees hold a unique edge. Soto thrived in pinstripes, providing the offensive jolt the team had been missing for years. His presence not only transformed the Yankees’ lineup but also elevated the play of his teammates, as David Ortiz recently acknowledged in an interview with WEEI: “The Yankees went that far this year because of him. He changed everything for them.”

The crosstown Mets are expected to be a formidable competitor, with Steve Cohen’s financial muscle posing a significant challenge. Yet, the Yankees’ willingness to push beyond their previous spending thresholds reflects their determination to build around Soto and sustain their championship aspirations.

Other contenders include the Toronto Blue Jays, who view Soto as a generational talent worth deviating from their typical budgetary constraints. However, their interest may be limited to Soto alone, as they’re unlikely to redirect those resources elsewhere if they miss out on the Dominican superstar.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers—often a player for top-tier talent—seem less aggressive this offseason after committing $700 million to Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Soto’s expected price tag and potential need to transition to designated hitter duties later in his career could make Los Angeles more opportunistic than proactive.

For the Yankees, Soto represents more than just another superstar signing. He’s a generational talent who has already demonstrated his ability to handle the pressure of New York, both on the field and in the clubhouse. As the bidding war intensifies, all signs point to the Yankees remaining Soto’s most logical long-term home—a partnership that could define the next decade in the Bronx.

Outside of the Mets who have both the Scherzer and Verlander contracts coming off their books, the Yankees who already had Sito count for $31M in ’24, I can’t see who can absorb Soto’s contract that also meet his criteria. But then again, there’s always that sleeper team that surprises everyone.
